Parking Brake System: Adjustments
The parking brake must be adjusted any time the parking brake cables have been replaced or disconnected, or if parking brake holding ability is inadequate. Before adjusting the parking brake, check the condition of the service brakes. The service brakes must be adjusted properly before proceeding with the parking brake adjustment.^ Raise the vehicle.
1. Tighten the adjuster nut on the equalizer, periodically turning the rear wheels by hand, until the rear brake shoes begin to contact the brake drums. A rubbing noise from the brake drums should be heard when this occurs.
2. Fully apply and release the parking brake lever to the floor three times.
3. Repeat Step 1.
4. Loosen the adjuster nut on the equalizer two revolutions.
^ There should be no brake drag in either direction.
5. Lower the vehicle.
