As mentioned, the system may require recalibration if the vehicle structure is altered sufficiently. This is due to the fact that the vehicle itself has an inherent magnetic field which is accounted for in the
compass calibration. When the vehicle structure is altered, as in a collision, the magnetic field may be altered enough to provide an offset in the compass reading. The result in the customer reporting a difference in compass readings from those previously observed along familiar routes.
