Wheel Hub: Service and Repair
FRONT HUB/BEARING^ Tools Required:
- J 36607 Ball Joint Separator
- J 35917 Ball Joint Remover
- J 36605 Steering Knuckle Seal Installer
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
NOTE:
- Two-thirds of the fluid from the brake reservoir.
- Raise the vehicle.
1. Tire and wheel.
- Install a cover on the axle joint.
2. Brake caliper. Refer to Brakes and Traction Control.
NOTE: Support the brake caliper with a piece of wire to prevent damage to the brake line.
3. Brake rotor. Refer to Brakes and Traction Control.
4. Drive axle nut.
5. Washer.
6. Tie rod end nut.
7. Tie rod end from the knuckle.
8. Hub and bearing assembly, using a puller.
9. Drive axle.
10. Splash shield bolts.
11. Splash shield.
- Support the lower control arm with a jack stand.
12. Upper ball joint nut.
13. Upper ball joint from the knuckle using J 36607.
14. Lower ball joint nut.
15. Lower ball joint from the knuckle using J 3597.
16. Knuckle.
17. Seal from the knuckle.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Seal into the knuckle, using J 36605.
2. Knuckle to the upper and lower ball joints.
3. Nuts.
4. Nuts.
^ Tighten
- Nut to 128 Nm (95 lb ft).
- Nuts to 90 Nm (66 lb ft).
^ Tighten the nuts to align the cotter pin. Do not tighten more than 1/6 turn.
5. New cotter pins.
- Bend the pin ends against the nut flats.
6. Splash shield.
- Be sure the splash shield is aligned properly.
7. Splash shield bolts. Tighten to 16 Nm (12 lb ft).
8. Drive axle.
9. Hub and bearing assembly.
- Align the threaded holes.
10. Bolts. Tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb ft).
11. Tie rod end to the knuckle.
12. Tie rod end nut.
13. Washer.
14. Nut. Tighten to 200 Nm (147 lb ft).
15. Brake rotor.
16. Brake caliper.
- Remove the axle joint cover.
17. Tire and wheel.
18. Wheel lug nuts.
- Remove the jack stand.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Align the front wheels and check vehicle trim height.
