Steering Column - Removal and Installation
CAUTION: When the column Is removed from the vehicle, a sharp blow on the end of the steering shaft or shift lever, leaning on the column assembly, or dropping of the assembly could shear or loosen the plastic fasteners that maintain column rigidity.CAUTION: Do not rotate steering column shaft after steering column has been removed. Damage to the SIR coil may occur.
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
NOTE: Set front wheels in the straight-ahead position and the steering wheel in the "LOCKED" position.
1. Negative battery cable.
WARNING: This vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR). Refer to the SIR WARNINGS in "Service Precautions."
2. Disable SIR.
3. Driver side knee bolster.
4. Driver side knee bolster deflector.
5. Transmission control linkage from the column shift lever.
Steering Column Electrical Connector:
6. Steering column wire harness from I/P wire harness.
- Un-bolt 48-way connector at base of steering column.
7. Steering wheel.
Intermediate Shaft Angles:
8. Intermediate shaft from steering column shaft.
9. Two lower steering column mounting nuts.
10. Two upper steering column mounting nuts.
- Support the steering column as you loosen the Nuts.
Intermediate Shaft Boot:
11. Steering column assembly.
Steering Column Installation:
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Steering column through the cowl opening and onto two lower studs.
- Raise the steering column into place.
2. Upper column mounting nuts.
- Loosely assemble. Do not tighten.
3. Lower column mounting nuts.
- Tighten
- Lower column mounting nuts to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).
- Upper column mounting nuts to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).
4. Intermediate shaft to steering column shaft.
5. Transmission control linkage.
6. Steering wheel.
7. Steering column wire harness to I/P wire harness. Tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb in).
8. Enable SIR.
9. Driver's knee bolster deflector.
10. Driver's knee bolster.
11. Negative battery cable.
