Steering Column - Removal and Installation
NOTICE:^ When the steering column is removed from the vehicle, a sharp blow on the end of the steering shaft or shift lever, leaning on the column assembly, or dropping of the assembly could shear or loosen the plastic fasteners that maintain column rigidity.
^ Do not rotate steering shaft after steering column has been removed. Damage to SIR components may occur.
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Battery negative cable.
CAUTION: Before removing or installing any electrical unit or when a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with "live" exposed electrical terminals, disconnect the negative battery cable to help prevent personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or components. Unless instructed otherwise, the ignition switch must be in the "OFF" or "LOCK" position.
2. Disable the SIR system.
3. Knee deflector.
4. Transmission control linkage (column-shift models only).
5. Steering column bulkhead connector from the vehicle wire harness by loosening the center screw.
6. Nuts that retain the steering column to the steering column toe plate.
7. Nuts that retain the steering column to the magnesium beam.
8. Steering column from the vehicle.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Steering column to the vehicle.
2. Nuts that retain the steering column to the magnesium beam.
^ Tighten nuts to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).
3. Nuts that retain the steering column to the steering column toe plate.
^ Tighten nuts to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).
4. Steering column bulkhead connector to the vehicle wire harness.
^ Tighten center screw to 6 Nm (53 lb in).
5. Transmission control linkage.
6. Knee deflector.
7. Enable the SIR system.
8. Battery negative cable.
