Lights - Headlamp Boot Loose

File In Section: 8 - Chassis/Body Electrical

Bulletin No.: 76-82-10

Date: January, 1998

Subjet:
Headlamp Boot Loose (Resecure with Adhesive)

Models:
1998 GMC S/T Models
1998 Oldsmobile Bravada

Condition
Some owners may comment that the rubber boot (or seal) that encompasses the headlamp is loose.

Cause
Inconsistent application of adhesive.

Correction
Resecure the boot following the service procedure. Do not replace the headlamp unless the boot cannot be properly reattached or is damaged.

Service Procedure

1. Using isopropyl alcohol and a lint free cloth, clean the area around and under the portion of the boot that has come loose.

2. Using rubber gloves, carefully apply a thin bead of GM P/N 12345632 instant gel adhesive to either the face of the lens or the back of the rubber boot, depending on the location of the bond failure. Take extreme care to ensure that the adhesive does not come in contact with the painted portion of the vehicle. Do not attempt to repair a section larger than 1-2 inches at a time, should such a gap exist.

3. Immediately apply firm, continuous pressure to the boot at the point of the newly applied adhesive. You must maintain this pressure for a minimum of 60 seconds, while cleaning off any excess adhesive with a lint free cloth soaked in mineral spirits. It may be necessary to turn the cloth frequently while doing this.

Notice:
Mineral spirits may damage vehicle paint, and should only be applied using a lint free cloth.
