Steering Shaft Assembly

NOTE: This procedure is used to service the following components:
^ Steering Shaft Asm
^ Adapter & Bearing Asm
^ Strg Col Jacket Asm





Standard Steering Column:




Standard Steering Column - Legend:






^ Tools Required:
- J 23653-SIR Lock Plate Compressor
- J 41352 Modular Column Holding Fixture
- Or Equivalents

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative (-) battery cable.
2. Disable the SIR System, Refer to Disabling The Sir System.
3. Do removal steps 1 through 7, Refer to Lower Shroud Steering Column Lock Cylinder Set Upper Shroud Shift Lever Seal.
4. Do all removal steps, Refer to Upper Column Housing Components.

Removing Steering Shaft Assembly:





5. Steering column seal (62) from end of steering shaft assembly (32).
6. Adapter & bearing assembly (60), and steering shaft assembly (32) from bottom of jacket assembly (58). Adapter & bearing assembly (60) from shaft assembly (32).
- Retaining ring (31) from shaft assembly (32).

INSTALL OR CONNECT

CAUTION: Always use the correct fastener In the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that application. The manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The manufacturer will also call out the fasteners that require thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other corrosion Inhibitors) on threaded fasteners or fastener pint Interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener torque and pint clamping force, and may damage the fastener. When you install fasteners, use the correct tightening sequence and specifications. Following these Instructions can help you avoid damage to parts and systems. Failure to do so may result in component damage or malfunction of steering column.

1. Retaining ring (31) to steering shaft assembly (32).
2. Shaft assembly (32) through bottom of jacket assembly (58).

Removing Shaft Lock Bearing Retainer:





3. Adapter & bearing assembly(60) to steering column jacket assembly (58). Position tab on adapter & bearing assembly (60) with slot in steering column jacket assembly (58) and push together.
4. Steering column seal (62) to end of steering shaft assembly (32).
5. Do steps 1 through 5, Refer to Upper Column Housing Components.
6. Do steps 1 through 7, Refer to Coil Assembly, Inflatible Restraint Steering Wheel.
7. Steering column assembly to vehicle.
8. If all service operations are completed, enable the SIR system; refer to Enabling The Sir System.
9. Negative (-) battery cable.
