Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
REMOVAL PROCEDURE1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Drain the engine coolant.
3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
4. Remove the upper radiator hose.
5. Remove both heater hoses.
6. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the distributor cap.
7. Remove the distributor cap.
8. Remove the coolant bypass hose from the water pump.
9. Remove the drive belt.
10. Remove the A/C compressor from the mounting bracket, if equipped, and set it aside.
IMPORTANT: It is not necessary to evacuate the A/C refrigerant.
11. Remove the wiring bracket from the rear of the cylinder head.
12. Disconnect the accessory bracket and slide it forward.
13. Remove the lower intake manifold.
14. Remove the exhaust manifold.
15. Remove the valve rocker arms and pushrods.
16. Remove the power steering pump pulley.
17. Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket using the following procedure:
- Disconnect the electrical connector from the power steering pump.
- Remove the two nuts holding the power steering pump to the engine.
- Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket bolts and the nut.
- Slide the power steering pump mounting bracket forward with the power steering pump still attached.
- Set the power steering pump and the mounting bracket aside.
- Remove the stud.
18. Disconnect the wiring bracket from the rear of the right cylinder head.
19. For the right side cylinder head, remove the following components:
- Generator.
- Oil indicator tube bracket bolt.
20. Remove the generator mounting bracket using the following procedure:
- Remove the one nut.
- Remove the three bolts.
- Slide the mounting bracket off of the stud.
- Remove the stud.
21. Remove the sixteen cylinder head bolts.
22. Remove the cylinder head and the gasket. Refer to Cylinder Head Removal (Right) under Engine Unit Repair.
23. Clean all sealing surfaces. Refer to Cylinder Head Clean and Inspect under Engine Unit Repair.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
- Tools Required
- J 36660 Torque Angle Meter
1. Install the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Installation (Right) under Engine Unit Repair.
2. Install the valve rocker arms and the pushrods.
NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
3. For the left side cylinder head, install the power steering pump mounting bracket using the following procedure:
- Install the stud to the cylinder head.
- Tighten Tighten the stud to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
- Loosely assemble the mounting bracket over the stud.
- Install a nut to the stud finger tight.
- Install the three bolts finger tight.
- Install the two nuts to the power steering pump finger tight.
- Tighten the nuts and bolts to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
- Install the power steering pump pulley.
- Connect the electrical connector to the power steering pump.
NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
4. For the right side cylinder head, install the generator mounting bracket using the following procedure:
- Install the stud.
- Tighten the stud to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
- Loosely assemble the generator mounting bracket over the stud.
- Install a nut to the stud finger tight.
- Install the three bolts finger tight.
- Tighten the nuts and bolts to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
- Install the generator.
- Oil indicator tube bracket bolt.
- Install the exhaust manifold.
- Install the lower intake manifold.
- Install the valve rocker arm covers.
- Install the wiring bracket to the rear of the cylinder head.
- Connect the accessory bracket.
- Install the A/C compressor, if equipped.
- Install the drive belt.
- Install the distributor cap.
- Connect the spark plug wires to the distributor cap.
- Install both heater hoses.
- Install the upper radiator hose.
- Install the air cleaner assembly.
- Refill the engine coolant.
- Connect the battery negative cable.
