TECHNICAL
Subject:
Rattling Noise at Left Rear Corner of Instrument Panel
(Apply Insulating Strip to Defroster Duct)
Models:
1999 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra Models
Condition
Some owners may comment about a rattling noise coming from the left rear corner of the instrument panel (IP).
Cause
The condition may be caused by insufficient clearance between the IP top pad and the defroster duct.
Correction
Install a 3(R) Scotchmate Hook and Loop Fastening System (P/N 06480), or equivalent, to the top side of the left defroster duct. Installing the loop side of this fastening system between the IP top pad and the defroster duct will act as an insulator to correct this condition. Use the following procedure:
1. Remove the IP top pad. Refer to steps 1-13 of IP Carrier Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console in the 1999 Silverado and Sierra Service Information.
2. Separate the two halves of the 3M(R) Scotch mate Hook and Loop, or equivalent.
3. Discard the hook/rough side of the strip.
4. Cut the strip to a length of 25 mm (1 in).
5. Install the loop/soft side of the strip to the top side of the left defroster duct. Place the strip to the left of the duct.
6. Install the IP top pad. Refer to steps 2637 of P Carrier Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console in the 1999 Silverado and Sierra Service Information.
