Cylinder Head Replacement



CYLINDER HEAD REPLACEMENT

REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Remove the lower intake manifold. Service and Repair






2. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the distributor cap.
3. Remove the distributor cap.
4. Remove the water pump inlet hose from the water pump.
5. Remove the drive belt. Service and Repair






IMPORTANT: It is not necessary to evacuate the A/C refrigerant.

6. Remove the A/C compressor from the power steering bracket, if equipped, and set it aside. Service and Repair

7. Remove AIR check valve (crossover) pipe, if so equipped. Service and Repair






8. Remove the wiring bracket from the rear of the cylinder head.
9. Disconnect the accessory bracket and slide it forward. Service and Repair

10. Remove the exhaust manifold. Service and Repair
11. Remove the valve rocker arms and pushrods. Service and Repair
12. Remove the power steering pump. Service and Repair
13. Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket. Service and Repair






14. For the right side cylinder head, remove the following components:
- Generator. Service and Repair
- Oil indicator tube bracket bolt. Service and Repair

15. Remove the generator and drive belt tensioner bracket. Service and Repair






16. Remove the sixteen cylinder head bolts.
17. Remove the cylinder head and the gasket.
18. Clean all sealing surfaces.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

- Tools Required
- J 36660 Torque Angle Meter






1. Install the cylinder heads.
A. Refer to Engine Overhaul. 72. Cylinder Head Installation - Left
B. Refer to Engine Overhaul. 73. Cylinder Head Installation - Right

2. Install the valve rocker arms and the valve pushrods.
3. Install the lower intake manifold.






4. For the left side cylinder head, install the power steering pump mounting bracket.

5. For the right side cylinder head, install the generator mounting bracket.
6. Install the generator.
7. Oil indicator tube bracket bolt.
8. Install the exhaust manifold.
9. Install the valve rocker arm covers.
10. Install the wiring bracket to the rear of the cylinder head.
11. Connect the accessory bracket.
12. Install the A/C compressor, if equipped.
13. Install the drive belt.






14. Install the distributor cap.
15. Connect the spark plug wires to the distributor cap.
16. Install both heater hoses.
17. Install the upper radiator hose.
18. Install the air cleaner assembly.
19. Refill the cooling system. Service and Repair
