Removal Procedure
Tool Required
- J 21366 Converter holding tool.
1. Raise the vehicle.
2. Remove the filler tube from the transmission.
3. Plug the filler tube opening in the transmission.
4. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe.
5. Remove the shift cable from the transmission.
6. Remove the rear propeller shaft.
7. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, remove the front propeller shaft.
8. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, remove the transfer case.
9. Remove the oil cooler lines.
10. Plug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
11. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the transmission speed sensor and park neutral position switch.
12. Remove the bolts securing the converter cover to the transmission.
13. Remove the torque converter bolts.
14. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
15. Remove the transmission mount to the transmission support retaining nut or nuts.
16. Raise the transmission to take the weight off of the mount.
17. Remove the transmission mount to the transmission or transfer case adapter mounting bolts (1).
18. Raise the transmission just enough to remove the transmission mount.
19. Remove the transmission mount from the vehicle.
20. Remove the bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
21. Slide the transmission back just enough to install J 21366.
22. Install J 21366 to the converter housing to secure the torque converter.
Important: J 21366 prevents the torque converter from pulling forward and dropping out of the transmission during engine and transmission separation.
23. Pull the transmission straight back from the engine.
24. Lower the transmission using the transmission jack.
25. Remove J 21366 from the transmission.
26. Flush the transmission oil cooler and lines.
Installation Procedure
1. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
2. Raise the transmission into place and remove J 21366.
3. Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter.
4. Ensure the torque converter is seated properly.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
5. Install the bolts securing the transmission to the engine. Tighten transmission to engine bolts to 47 Nm (35 lb ft).
6. Secure the torque converter to the flywheel.
7. Secure the converter cover to the transmission with the bolts. Tighten the bolts to 47 Nm (35 lb ft).
8. Install the transmission mount to the vehicle.
9. Install the transmission mount to the transmission or transfer case adapter mounting bolts (1). For vehicles equipped with 2.2L, tighten the bolts to 45 Nm (33 lb ft). For vehicles equipped with 4.3L, tighten the bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb ft).
10. Lower the transmission.
11. Install the transmission mount to the transmission support retaining nut or nuts. Tighten the nut or nuts to 57 Nm (42 lb ft).
12. Remove the transmission jack.
13. Connect the wiring harness connectors to the transmission speed sensor and park neutral position switch.
14. Unplug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
15. Install the oil cooler lines.
16. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, install the transfer case.
17. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, install the front propeller shaft.
18. Install the rear propeller shaft.
19. Install the shift cable to the transmission.
20. Install the exhaust crossover pipe.
21. Unplug the filler tube opening in the transmission.
22. Install the filler tube to the transmission.
23. Fill the transmission to the proper level with transmission oil.
24. Lower the vehicle.
25. Test the transmission for proper operation.
