Removal and Replacement
Removal Procedure- Tools Required
- J 21366 Converter Holding Strap
1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Drain the transmission fluid. Refer to AT Fluid/Filter Changing.
3. Remove the shift cable from the transmission. Refer to Shift Cable Replacement.
4. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement - Rear in Propeller Shaft.
5. If equipped with a transfer case, remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement - Front in Propeller Shaft.
6. If equipped with a transfer case, remove the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Replacement in Transfer Case.
7. Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement (Rear Wheel Drive) or Catalytic Converter Replacement (Automatic Four Wheel Drive) in Engine Exhaust.
8. Remove the filler tube from the transmission. Refer to Filler Tube Replacement
9. Plug the fluid fill tube opening in the transmission.
10. Remove the torque converter bolts. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolts.
11. Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the vehicle speed sensor and from the park/neutral position switch.
12. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines from the transmission. Refer to Oil Cooler Line Replacement.
13. Plug the transmission oil cooler lines connectors in the transmission case.
14. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.
15. Remove nine bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
16. Pull the transmission straight back from the engine.
17. Install the J 21366 in order to keep the torque converter from sliding off of the transmission turbine shaft.
18. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
19. Flush the transmission oil cooler and the lines. Refer to AT Oil Cooler Flushing.
Installation Procedure

- J 21366 Converter Holding Strap
1. Install the J 21366 in order to keep the torque converter from sliding off of the transmission turbine shaft.
2. Raise the transmission into place and remove the J 21366.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in General Information.
3. Install the nine bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
4. Tighten the bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the torque converter bolts. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolts.
6. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Starting and Charging.
7. Unplug the transmission oil cooler lines connectors in the transmission case.
8. Connect the transmission oil cooler lines to the transmission. Refer to Oil Cooler Line Replacement.
9. Connect the wiring harness connector to the vehicle speed sensor and the park/neutral position switch.
10. Unplug the fluid fill tube opening in the transmission.
11. Install the filler tube. Refer to Filler Tube Replacement
12. Install the catalytic converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement (Rear Wheel Drive) or Catalytic Converter Replacement (Automatic Four Wheel Drive) in Engine Exhaust.
13. If equipped with a transfer case, install the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Replacement in Transfer Case.
14. If equipped with a transfer case, Install the front propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement - Front in Propeller Shaft.
15. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement - Rear in Propeller Shaft.
16. Install the shift cable to the transmission. Refer to Shift Cable Replacement.
17. Lower the vehicle.
18. Fill the transmission with new transmission fluid. Refer to Fluid Capacity.
