Wheel Hub, Bearing, and Seal Replacement
FRONT WHEEL BEARING/HUBREMOVAL PROCEDURE

- J 35917 Ball Joint Remover
- J 36607 Knuckle Seal Installer
1. Drain two-thirds of the fluid from the brake reservoir.
2. Raise the vehicle.
3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
4. Install a cover on the axle joint.
NOTICE: Support the caliper with a piece of wire to prevent damage to the brake line.
5. Remove the brake caliper.
6. Remove the brake rotor.
7. Disconnect the speed sensor electrical connector.
8. Remove the speed sensor from the bearing.
9. Remove the drive axle nut and the washer.
10. Remove the tie rod end nut and disconnect the tie rod end from the knuckle.
11. Using a puller, remove the hub and bearing assembly.
12. Remove the drive axle.
13. Remove the splash shield bolts.
14. Remove the splash shield.
15. Support the lower control arm with a jack stand.
16. Remove the upper ball joint nut.
17. Disconnect the upper ball joint from the knuckle using the J 36607.
18. Remove the lower ball joint nut.
19. Disconnect the lower ball joint from the knuckle using the J 35917.
20. Remove the knuckle.
21. Remove the seal from the knuckle.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the seal into the knuckle using the J 36605.
2. Connect the knuckle to the upper and lower ball joints.
3. Install the lower ball joint to steering knuckle nut.
NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
4. Install the upper ball joint to steering knuckle nut.
- Tighten the lower nut to 128 Nm (95 ft. lbs.).
- Tighten the upper nut to 98 Nm (72 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the new cotter pins. Tighten the nuts up to an additional 1/6 amount in order to insert the cotter pin through the upper and lower ball joint studs. Bend the cotter pin ends flat against the nut.
6. Install the splash shield. Make sure to properly align the splash shield.
7. Install the splash shield bolts.
- Tighten the bolts to 16 Nm (12 ft. lbs.).
8. Install the drive axle.
9. Install the hub and bearing assembly. Align the threaded holes.
10. Install the bolts.
- Tighten the bolts to 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.).
11. Install the drive axle washer and the nut.
- Tighten the nut to 200 Nm (147 ft. lbs.).
12. Install the outer tie rod.
13. Install the speed sensor to the bearing.
14. Connect the speed sensor electrical connector.
15. Install the brake rotor.
16. Install the brake caliper.
17. Remove the axle joint cover.
18. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
19. Lower the vehicle.
20. Check the master cylinder fluid level.
IMPORTANT: Before moving the vehicle, pump the brake pedal until it is firm. Check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder after pumping the brakes.
21. Check the front wheel alignment.
22. Check the vehicle trim height.
