Hub and Drum Assembly Replacement
HUB AND DRUMRemoval Procedure
^ Tools Required
- J2222-C Wheel Bearing Nut Wrench
1. Raise the vehicle and support the vehicle with safety stands.
2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Excessively Tight Wheels) in Wheels, Tires and Alignment.
3. Remove the axle shaft. Refer to Axle Shaft Replacement (10 1/2 Inch Ring Gear).
4. Remove the retaining ring (10) from the axle.
5. Remove the key way (9) from the axle.
6. Remove the adjusting nut and the washer from the axle using J2222-C.
7. Remove the outer bearing (7) from the axle.
8. Remove the retaining clip (11) from the axle.
9. Remove the axle oil seal (2).
10. Remove the inner bearing (1) from the axle.
11. Remove the hub and drum assembly (3) from the axle.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the hub and drum assembly (3) to the axle.
2. Install the inner bearing (1) to the axle.
3. Install the axle oil seal (2).
4. Install the retaining clip (11) to the axle.
5. Apply a light coat of a high melting point EP bearing lubricant to the contact surfaces and the outside of the axle tube.
Important: Make sure the bearings and oil seal are properly positioned.
6. Install the outer bearing (7) to the axle.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
7. Install the adjusting nut and washer using the J2222-C.
^ Tighten the adjusting nut to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.).
8. Install the key way (9) to the axle.
9. Install the retaining ring (10) to the axle.
10. Install the axle shaft. Refer to Axle Shaft Replacement (10 1/2 Inch Ring Gear).
11. Install the wheel and tire assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Excessively Tight Wheels) in Wheels, Tires and Alignment.
12. Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle.
