Battery Cable: Service and Repair

DISCONNECTING THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE FOR SERVICE

CAUTION: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. It a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

1. Record all preset and theft codes from the radio.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
3. Verify that all electrical components are off such as interior lights, all doors are closed, underhood lamp etc.
4. Remove the retaining bolt from the battery negative cable.
5. Remove the belfry negative cable from the battery.
6. Position the battery negative cable away from any body ground.
7. Remove the auxiliary battery negative cable if equipped with two batteries.

CONNECTING THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE FOR SERVICE
1. Verify that all electrical components are off such as interior lights, all doors are closed, underhood lamp etc.
2. Clean the negative battery cable from corrosion using a metal brush.
3. Install the auxiliary battery negative cable to the battery.

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

Tighten
Tighten the auxiliary battery negative cable to 17 N.m (13 lb ft).

4. Install the battery negative cable to the battery.
5. Install the retaining bolt to the battery negative cable.

Tighten
Tighten the battery negative cable bolt to 17 N.m (13 lb ft).

6. Reset the radio stations and clock.
