Intermediate Steering Shaft
REMOVAL PROCEDURE- Tools Required
- J 42640 Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin
1. Install the J 42640 anti-rotation pin in the steering column lower access hole.
2. Remove the protective cover from the steering column under the Instrument Panel to gain access to the bolt.
3. Remove the bolt (3) retaining the intermediate shaft (2) to the steering column (1).
4. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with suitable safety stands.
5. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
6. Mark the Intermediate Shaft to Steering Gear alignment before removal.
7. Position the intermediate shaft cover (1) for access to the lower shaft pinch bolt. Turn the steering wheel to allow access to the pinch bolt.
8. Remove the intermediate shaft retaining bolt (3) from the steering gear stub shaft.
9. Remove the intermediate shaft from the vehicle.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
1. Make sure to align the marks made at removal.
Install the intermediate shaft (1) to the steering gear stub shaft.
2. Install the intermediate shaft retaining bolt (3) to the steering gear stub shaft.
- Tighten the intermediate shaft retaining bolt to the steering gear stub shaft to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the air cleaner assembly.
4. Install the intermediate shaft (2) to the steering column (1).
NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
5. Install the intermediate shaft retaining bolt (3) to the steering column (1).
- Tighten the intermediate shaft bolt to the steering column to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
Make sure the cover to the steering column is inside the intermediate shaft cover.
6. Remove the safety stands. Lower the vehicle.
7. Remove the J 42640 anti-rotation pin from the steering column lower access hole.
