Power Steering Gear Replacement
Removal Procedure1. Place a drain pan below the steering gear.
2. Remove the hoses from the steering gear.
2.1. Raise the hose up in order to prevent oil drainage.
2.2. Cap or tape the ends of the hose and the gear fittings in order to prevent the entrance of dirt.
3. Remove the intermediate shaft. Refer to one of the following procedures:

- Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement (C3500HD)Steering Column-Standard
- Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement (Except C3500HD)Steering Column-Tilt
- Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement (C3500HD)Steering Column-Tilt
4. Remove the pitman arm. Refer to the appropriate procedure in Steering Linkage:
- Pitman Arm Replacement (RWD)
- Pitman Arm Replacement (S4WD)
- Pitman Arm Replacement (C3500HD)
5. Remove the steering gear frame bolts and the steering gear.
Installation Procedure
1. Place the steering gear in position. Guide the stub shaft into the Cardan joint assembly by lining up the marks made at removal.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
2. Install the steering gear to the frame bolts.
- Tighten the bolts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the pitman arm. Refer to the appropriate procedure in Steering Linkage:
- Pitman Arm Replacement (ROOD)
- Pitman Arm Replacement (S4WD)
- Pitman Arm Replacement (C3500HD)
4. Install the intermediate shaft. Refer to one of the following:
- Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement (Except C3500HD)Steering Column-Standard
- Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement (C3500HD)Steering Column-Standard
- Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement (Except C3500HD)Steering Column-Tilt
- Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement (C3500HD)Steering Column-Tilt
5. Remove the plugs and the caps from the steering gear and the hoses.
6. Remove the hoses to the steering gear.
- Tighten the hose connection to 28 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
7. Bleed the system. Refer to Bleeding Power Steering System.
