Front Leaf Springs Replacement
Removal ProcedureTools Required
- J 6627-A Wheel Stud and Tie Rod Remover
1. Raise the vehicle. Support the axle separately in order to eliminate any load on the springs.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Single Front or Rear Wheels) in Wheels, Tires and Alignment.
3. Remove the nut and the washer.
4. Remove the shock absorber from the axle.
5. Remove the nut and the washer.
6. Remove the stabilizer link from the stabilizer shaft. Using the J 6627-A, separate the stabilizer shaft from the stabilizer link.
7. Remove the nut, the retainer, and the insulator.
8. Remove the stabilizer link from the axle. Pull the link free from the axle. Do not lose the other insulator and retainer.
9. Remove the nuts, the washers, and the U-bolts.
10. Remove the spacer and the spring spacer.
11. Remove the leaf spring from the axle.
12. Remove the nut, the washer, the bolt, and the washer in order to separate the spring from the rear shackle.
13. Remove the nut, the washer, the bolt, and the washer in order to separate the spring from the front hanger.
14. Pull the leaf spring back and out.
15. Remove the leaf spring from the frame.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the leaf spring to the frame.
- Line up each end of the spring with the spring hangers.
- The double wrap end of the spring should be toward the front of the vehicle.
2. Attach the spring to the front spring hanger with the washers, the bolt, and the nut.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
3. Attach the spring to the spring hanger with the washers, the bolt, and the nut.
- Tighten the nut to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.).
4. Install the leaf spring to the axle.
- Position the spring spacer onto the axle.
- Either of the aligning pins may contact the edge of the leaf spring after the assembly is complete.
5. Install the spacer, the U-bolts, the washers, and the nuts.
- Tighten the nuts, in a diagonal sequence, to 125 Nm (92 ft. lbs.).
6. Install the stabilizer link (with lower retainer and insulator) to the frame.
7. Install the stabilizer link upper insulator, retainer, and the nut.
- Tighten the nut until the distance between each retainer is 38.0 mm (1.5 inch).
8. Install the stabilizer link to the stabilizer shaft.
9. Install the washer and the nut.
- Tighten the nut to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.).
10. Install the shock absorber to the axle.
11. Install the washer and the nut.
- Tighten the nut to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
12. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Single Front or Rear Wheels) in Wheels, Tires and Alignment.
13. Lower the vehicle.
14. Check the front wheel alignment. Refer to Measuring Wheel Alignment in Wheel Alignment.
