Inspection
Inspection Procedure
Perform the following checks before disassembling the axle:
1. Remove the drain plug from the axle. Drain the axle lubricant.
2. Check the ring gear backlash. Refer to Backlash Inspection and Adjustment.
This information can be used in order to determine the cause of the axle problem. The information will also help when setting up the shim packs for locating and preloading the differential case.
3. Inspect the case for metal chips. Determine the source of the metal chips, such as a broken gear or bearing cage.
4. Determine the cause of the axle problem before disassembly, if possible.

12. Remove the output shaft.
13. Use the J 34011 in order to remove the differential pilot bearing.
14. Use the J 2619-01 and J 21579 in order to remove the left output shaft.
15. Remove the seal.
Pry the seal out with a removal tool.
16. Remove the bearings.
17. For the 4WD 15 Series, and 4WD 25 Series models, use the J 29369- 1.
18. Remove the bolts.
19. Remove the right side carrier half.
Tap on the cast lugs that are provided.
20. Remove the differential assembly.
Pry up on the locks.
21. Remove the sleeve(s) and the side bearing cups.
^ Turn the sleeve(s) in order to push the bearing cup(s) out of the bore(s).
^ Use the J 36599.
22. Remove the nut.
Use the J 8614-01 in order to hold the pinion flange.
23. Remove the washer.
24. Use the J 8614-01 in order to remove the pinion flange with the deflector.
25. Mount the left carrier case in the J 36598. For the 4WD 15 Series, and 4WD 25 Series models, use the adapter plate J 36598.
26. Use the J 36598 in order to remove the ring and pinion with the following parts:
^ The shim
^ The bearing cone
^ The spacer
27. Remove the spacer from the pinion.
