Output Shaft, Bearing, and Tube Replacement (Right Side)

- J 29369-1 Bearing Remover (4 Wheel Drive)
- J 36609 Bearing Installer
- J 36600 Axle Seal Installer (4 Wheel Drive)
Removal Procedure
1. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle using safety stands. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the wheel drive shaft assembly. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement.
3. Drain the front axle. Refer to Lubricant Change.
4. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
5. Remove the axle shaft (output shaft) tube nuts (2) from the bracket (1).
6. Remove the bracket bolts from the frame. Do not remove the bracket (1). The bolts are removed in order to provide clearance.
7. Remove the axle shaft (output shaft) bolts (11) from the carrier.
Important: Keep the open end of the tube (5) up.
8. Remove the axle shaft (output shaft) tube (5) from the carrier. Ensure the spring (16) is not lost during removal.
9. In a vise, hold the axle shaft (output shaft) tube (5) by the mounting flange.
10. Remove the following components:
^ The shift shaft (12)
^ The damper spring (13)
^ The fork 14)
^ The clip assembly (115)
11. Remove the sleeve (9).
12. Remove the gear (7).
13. Remove the thrust washer (6).
14. Remove the axle shaft (output shaft) (1). Tap out the axle shaft (output shaft) with a soft mallet.
15. Remove the deflector (2). Pry out the deflector with a screwdriver.
16. Remove the seal (3). Pry out the seal with a screwdriver.
17. Remove the bearing (4). Use the J 29369-1 and a slide hammer.
18. Clean the parts in suitable solvent.
19. Clean the gasket surfaces on the axle shaft (output shaft) tube and carrier housing.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the new bearing (4) into the axle shaft (output shaft) tube (5) using the J 36609.
2. Apply axle lubricant to the bearing (4). Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations.
3. Install the new seal (3) using the J 36600 Axle.
4. Coat the seal lips (3) with axle lubricant. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations.
5. Install the deflector (2).
6. Install the axle shaft (output shaft) (1).
7. Install the thrust washer (6). Use grease in order to hold the thrush washer in place. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations.
8. Ensure the tabs on the thrush washer (6) align with the slot in the axle shaft (output shaft) tube (5).
9. Install the gear (7).
10. Install the sleeve (9).
11. Install the following components:
^ The shift shaft (12)
^ The damper spring (13)
^ The fork (14)
^ The clip assembly (15)
12. Apply sealant GM P/N 12345739 or the equivalent to the carrier sealing surfaces.
13. Install the spring (16) into the carrier case.
14. Install the axle shaft (output shaft) tube (5) to the carrier.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
15. Install the axle shaft (output shaft) bolts (11).
Tighten the bolts to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
16. Install the bracket bolts to the frame.
Tighten the bolts to 90 Nm (67 ft. lbs.).
17. Install the axle shaft (output shaft) tube nuts to the bracket (1).
Tighten the nuts to 100 Nm (75 ft. lbs.).
18. Install the wheel drive shaft assembly. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement.
19. Connect the electrical connectors.
20. Fill the front differential with lubricant until the level is 12mm (0.5 inch) below the fill plug. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations.
21. Lower the vehicle.
