Replacement
Removal Procedure
1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Drain the front axle. Refer to Lubricant Change.
3. Remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement.
4. Remove the left and the right drive axle wheel drive shaft. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement.
5. Remove the axle tube nuts (2) from the bracket (1).
6. Remove the wiring at the axle.
7. Remove the vent hose at the axle. Refer to Vent Hose Replacement.
8. Remove the carrier assembly lower mounting bolt (8) and the nut (4).
9. Disconnect the idler arm from the relay rod. Refer to Idler Arm Replacement In Steering and Suspension and Suspension.
10. Disconnect the pitman arm from the relay rod. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement (RWD) or Pitman Arm Replacement (S4WD) In Steering and Suspension and Suspension.
11. Attach a transmission jack to the carrier assembly (5).
12. Remove the upper carrier assembly mounting bolt (1) and the nut (2).
13. Remove the carrier assembly (5) from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the carrier assembly (5) to the vehicle.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
2. Install the carrier assembly upper mounting bolt (1), and the nut (2).
Install the lower carrier assembly mounting bolt (3) and the nut (4).
Tighten the bolts to 100 Nm (75 ft. lbs.).
3. Remove the transmission jack.
4. Install the pitman arm to the relay rod. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement (RWD) or Pitman Arm Replacement (S4WD) In Steering and Suspension and Suspension.
5. Install the idler arm to the relay rod. Refer to Idler Arm Replacement In Steering and Suspension and Suspension.
6. Install the axle tube nuts (2) to the bracket.
Tighten the bolts to 100 Nm (75 ft. lbs.).
7. Install the vent hose. Refer to Vent Hose Replacement.
8. Install the wiring to the axle.
9. Install the left and the right drive axle wheel drive shaft. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement.
10. Install the front propeller shaft to the pinion flange. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement.
11. Fill the front differential with lubricant until the level is 12 mm (0.5 inch) below the fill plug. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations.
