Rear Axle - Replacement


Removal Procedure
1. Raise the vehicle and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Support the rear axle.
3. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation In Steering and Suspension and Suspension.
4. Disconnect the rear axle vent tube.
5. Remove the propshaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement - Two Piece.
6. Disconnect the left rear parking brake cable from the rear axle. Refer to Park Brake Cable Replacement - Left Rear (Pickup) or Park Brake Cable Replacement - Left Rear (15 Series Utilities) or Park Brake Cable Replacement - Left Rear (25 Series Utilities) in Brakes and Traction Control.
7. Disconnect the right rear parking brake-cable from the rear axle. Refer to Park Brake Cable Replacement - Right Rear (Pickup) or Park Brake Cable Replacement - Right Rear (15 Series Utilities) or Park Brake Cable Replacement - Right Rear (25 Series Utilities) in Brakes and Traction Control.
8. Remove the caliper assemblies from the rear axle. Refer to Brake Caliper Replacement -Rear in Brakes and Traction Control.
9. Remove the stabilizer shaft from the rear axle. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement In Steering and Suspension and Suspension.
10. Remove the crossover brake pipe from the rear axle.
11. Remove the coil springs. Refer to Coil Spring Replacement In Steering and Suspension and Suspension.
12. Disconnect the track bar from the rear axle. Refer to Track Bar Replacement In Steering and Suspension and Suspension.
13. Disconnect the lower control arm from the rear axle. Refer to Rear Axle Lower Control Arm Replacement In Steering and Suspension and Suspension.
14. Disconnect the upper control arm from the rear axle. Refer to Rear Axle Upper Control Arm Replacement In Steering and Suspension and Suspension.
15. Remove the rear axle assembly from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure
1. Install the rear axle assembly to the vehicle.
2. Connect the upper control arm to the rear axle. Refer to Rear Axle Upper Control Arm Replacement In Steering and Suspension and Suspension.
3. Connect the lower control arm to the rear axle. Refer to Rear Axle Lower Control Arm Replacement In Steering and Suspension and Suspension.
4. Connect the track bar to the rear axle. Refer to Track Bar Replacement In Steering and Suspension and Suspension.
5. Install the coil springs. Refer to Coil Spring Replacement In Steering and Suspension and Suspension.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

6. Install the crossover brake pipe to the rear axle.
Tighten the bolt to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).
7. Install the stabilizer shaft to the rear axle. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement In Steering and Suspension and Suspension.
8. Install the caliper assemblies to the rear axle. Refer to Brake Caliper Replacement - Rear in Brakes and Traction Control.
9. Connect the right rear parking brake cable to the rear axle. Refer to Park Brake Cable Replacement - Right Rear (Pickup) or Park Brake Cable Replacement - Right Rear (15 Series Utilities) or Park Brake Cable Replacement - Right Rear (25 Series Utilities) in Brakes and Traction Control.
10. Connect the left rear parking brake cable to the rear axle. Refer to Park Brake Cable Replacement - Left Rear (Pickup) or Park Brake Cable Replacement - Left Rear (15 Series Utilities) or Park Brake Cable Replacement - Left Rear (25 Series Utilities) in Brakes and Traction Control.
11. Install the propshaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement - Two Piece.
12. Connect the rear axle vent tube.
13. Install the wheel and tire assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation In Steering and Suspension and Suspension.
14. Remove the safety supports from the vehicle.
15. Check the rear axle lubricant level. Refer to Lubricant Change.
16. Lower the vehicle.
