Inner Axle Shaft and/or Housing Replacement
FRONT AXLE SHAFT AND SEAL^ Tools Required
- J 23907 Slide Hammer
- J22761 Differential Side Bearing Installer
- J 36600 Axle Seal Installer Removal Procedure
1. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with jack stands. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Drain the front axle. Refer to Lubricant Change.
3. Remove the wheel drive shaft. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement.
Important: Do not damage the case.
4. Attach a slide hammer with an adapter to the axle shaft (output shaft) (19). Pull the axle shaft from the case.
5. Remove the deflector (28).
6. Remove the seal (27).
7. Remove the bearing (28) using the J23907.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the bearing with the square shoulder in using the J 22761.
2. Lubricate the new seal (27) lips with grease. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations.
3. Install the new seal (27) using the J 36600 Axle.
4. Install the deflector (28).
5. Install the axle shaft (output shaft) (19).
6. Carefully tap the axle shaft (output shaft) (19) into place with a soft mallet.
7. Install the wheel drive shaft. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement.
8. Fill the front differential with lubricant until the level is 12 mm (0.5 inch) below the fill plug. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations.
9. Remove the supports and lower the vehicle.
