Cylinder Head Replacement

Removal Procedure





1. Remove the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement (Lower).
2. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the distributor cap. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement.
3. Remove the distributor cap.
4. Remove the water pump inlet hose from the water pump. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement in Cooling System.
5. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.

Important: It is not necessary to evacuate the Air Conditioning refrigerant.

6. Remove the A/C compressor from the power steering pump bracket, if equipped, and set it aside. Refer to Compressor Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
7. Remove AIR check valve (crossover) pipe, if so equipped. Refer to Secondary Air Injection Check Valve/Pipe Replacement.





8. Remove the wiring bracket from the rear of the cylinder head.
9. Disconnect the accessory bracket and slide it forward. Refer to Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement (Left) and Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement (Right).
10. Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Left) or Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Right).
11. Remove the valve rocker arms and valve pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement.
12. Remove the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
13. Remove the power steering pump mounting bracket. Refer to Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement (Left) in Steering and Suspension.
14. For the right side cylinder head, remove the following components:
- Generator. Refer to Generator Replacement.
- Oil indicator tube bracket bolt. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement.
- Remove the generator and drive belt tensioner bracket. Refer to Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement (Right).





15. Remove the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Removal (Left) and Cylinder Head Removal (Right).


Installation Procedure

- J 36600 Axle Electronic Torque Angle Meter





1. Install the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Installation (Left) and Cylinder Head Installation (Right).
2. Install the valve rocker arms and the valve pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement.
3. Install the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement (Lower).
4. For the left side cylinder head, install the power steering pump mounting bracket. Refer to Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement (Left).
5. For the right side cylinder head, install the generator mounting bracket. Refer to Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement (Right).
6. Install the generator. Refer to Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement (Right).
7. Oil indicator tube bracket bolt. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement.
8. Install the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Left) or Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Left).
9. Install the valve rocker arm covers. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement.
10. Install the wiring bracket to the rear of the cylinder head.
11. Connect the accessory bracket. Refer to Accessory Mounting Brackets Replacement (Right).
12. Install the A/C compressor, if equipped. Refer to Compressor Replacement in Heating and Air Conditioning.
13. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
14. Install the distributor cap.
15. Connect the spark plug wires to the distributor cap. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement.
16. Install the upper radiator hose. Refer to Radiator Hose Replacement in Cooling System.
17. Install the air cleaner assembly.
18. Refill the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System.
