Cylinder Head Replacement

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.





1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the intake manifold from the engine. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement.
3. Remove the push rods from the engine. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement.
4. Remove the exhaust manifold(s) from the engine. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement.
5. Remove the generator from the engine. Refer to Generator Replacement.
6. Remove the generator mounting bracket from the engine using the following steps:
6.1. Remove the three bolts holding the generator mounting bracket to the cylinder head.
6.2. Remove the bolt behind the power steering pump.
6.3. Remove the generator mounting bracket and set it aside.





7. Remove the bolt holding the oil level indicator tube to the right side cylinder head.
8. Remove the oil level indicator tube.
9. Remove the cylinder head (s) from the engine. Refer to Cylinder Head Removal in Engine / Service and Repair / Unit Repair.
10. Clean and inspect the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Clean and Inspect.

Installation Procedure

Notice: Make sure that the correct cylinder head gasket is used when re-assembling the engine. Failure to use the correct gasket may result in loss of engine performance or engine damage.

1. Install the cylinder head(s) to the engine. Refer to unit Repair / Cylinder Head Installation.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





2. Install the generator mounting bracket to the left side cylinder head using the four bolts.
Tighten the mounting bracket to the cylinder head bolts to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).





3. Tighten the bolt at the rear of the power steering pump.
Tighten the bolt to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).
4. Install the generator to the engine. Refer to Generator Replacement.
5. Install the exhaust manifold (s) to the engine. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement.
6. Install the pushrods to the engine. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement.
7. Install the intake manifold to the engine. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement.
8. Connect the negative battery cable.
