Oil Consumption Diagnosis
An engine that has excessive oil consumption uses 0.9 L (1 qt.) of oil, or more, within 3,200 km (2,000 ml). The following list indicates the conditions and corrections of excessive oil consumption:
^ An improperly read oil level indicator (dipstick)
- Inspect the oil level while the vehicle is parked on a level surface.
- Allow adequate drain-down time of a minimum of 10 minutes at operating temperature.
^ Improper oil viscosity
- Use the recommended SAE viscosity type.
^ Continuous high-speed driving and/or high load operating conditions
Severe hauling, such as a trailer. This causes decreased oil mileage.
^ External oil leaks
Replace the gaskets and seals, as needed.
^ Damaged intake manifold gaskets
^ A malfunctioning crankcase ventilation system
Verify PCV flow orifice sealing.
^ Plugged cylinder head gasket oil drain holes
^ Worn or damaged valve guides, valve stem seals, valve and/or valve stems
- Refer to Cylinder Head Clean and Inspect.
- Refer to Valve Guide Reaming/Valve and Seat Grinding.
^ Damaged or worn pistons
^ Broken or worn piston rings
