Removal and Replacement


Removal Procedure
1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting
2. Remove the filler tube from the transmission. Refer to Shift Cable Replacement.
3. Plug the filler tube opening in the transmission.
4. Remove the exhaust manifold pipe. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Right) or Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Left).
5. Remove the shift cable from the transmission. Refer Shift Cable Replacement





6. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement-Rear.
7. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement-Front.
8. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, remove the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Replacement.
9. Remove the oil cooler lines. Refer to Oil Cooler Line Replacement.
10. Plug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
11. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the transmission speed sensor and park neutral position switch.
12. Remove the torque converter bolts. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolts.
13. Nut and washer securing the transmission mount to the cross member.
14. Remove the two bolts and washers securing the mount to the transmission.
15. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.





16. Remove the bolts and screws securing the converter cover to the transmission.
17. Remove the bolts securing the transmission to the engine.





18. Install J21336 to the converter housing to secure the torque converter

Important: J21336 prevents the torque converter from pulling forward and dropping out of the transmission during engine and transmission separation.

19. Pull the transmission straight back from the engine.
20. Lower the transmission using the transmission jack.

Installation Procedure

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





1. Install the bolts and screws securing the converter cover to the transmission.
^ Tighten transmission to engine bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).





2. Ensure the torque converter is seated properly and that J21366 is installed.
3. Raise the transmission into place and remove J21366.
Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
4. Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter.
5. Install the bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
^ Tighten transmission to engine bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).





6. Install the nut and washer securing the transmission mount to the cross member.
^ Tighten the bolts to 52 Nm (38 ft. lbs.).
7. Install the torque converter bolts. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolts.
8. Connect the wiring harness connectors to the transmission speed sensor and park neutral position switch.
9. Unplug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
10. Install the oil cooler lines. Refer to Oil Cooler Line Replacement.
11. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, install the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Replacement.
12. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, install the front propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement-Front.
13. install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement-Rear.
14. Install the shift cable to the transmission. Refer Filler Tube Replacement
15. Install the exhaust manifold pipe. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Right) or Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Left).
16. Unplug the filler tube opening in the transmission.
17. Install the filler tube to the transmission. Refer to Filler Tube Replacement.
18. Fill the transmission to the proper level with transmission oil. Refer to Fluid Capacity.
19. Lower the vehicle.
20. Test the transmission for proper operation.
