Removal ProcedureTools Required
- J 1859-A Steering Wheel Puller
Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Disable the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in Restraint Systems.
3. Remove the steering wheel inflator module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement in Restraint Systems.
4. Remove the horn switch assembly. Refer to Horn Switch Replacement - On Vehicle.
5. Remove the steering wheel nut.
Notice: When removing the steering wheel, use only the specified steering wheel puller. Do not hammer on the end of the steering column shaft. Hammering could loosen the plastic injections which maintain the steering column rigidity.
Important: Note or mark the relationship of the steering wheel splines to the steering shaft.
6. Remove the steering wheel using the J 1859-A.
Installation Procedure
Important: Use the marks made during the removal procedure when installing the steering wheel in order to correctly align the steering wheel splines to the steering shaft.
1. Install the steering wheel onto the steering shaft.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
2. Install the steering wheel nut.
Tighten the steering wheel nut to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the horn switch assembly. Refer to Horn Switch Replacement - On Vehicle.
4. Install the steering wheel inflator module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement in Restraint Systems.
5. Enable the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in Restraint Systems.
6. Connect the battery negative cable.
