Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing & Jacket - Assemble

Assembly Procedure

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

Important: If the steering column support assembly and the pivot pins have been staked 3 times they must be replaced.





1. Install the 4 TORX head screws (2) onto the steering column support assembly (1).
Tighten the TORX head screws to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).





2. Apply lithium grease to the race and upper shaft assembly and then install the lower shaft assembly using the alignment marks from the disassemble procedure.





3. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the steering column tilt head assembly (1).





4. Install the tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft assembly (3) into the steering column jacket assembly (2).

Important: If the steering column support assembly and the pivot pins have been staked 3 times they must be replaced.





5. Lubricate the pivot pins (1) with lithium grease.
6. Firmly seat each pivot pin (1) into the steering column tilt head assembly.
7. Stake the pivot pins (1).





8. Install the adapter and bearing assembly (2) onto the steering column jacket assembly (1).
9. Install the steering column seal (3) onto the adapter and bearing assembly (2).





10. Install the gearshift lever assembly support bracket onto the steering column support assembly.
Install the 3 flat head 6-lobed socket tapping screws onto the gearshift lever assembly support bracket.
Tighten the flat head 6-lobed socket tapping screws to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).





11. Install the cam bushing (2) to the cable shift cam assembly (1).
12. Install the cable shift cam assembly (1).
13. Install the hexagon flange head bolt.





14. Install the park lock cable assembly to the shift gate.
15. Install the 2 oval head 6-lobed socket tapping screws from the shift gate.
Tighten the oval head 6-lobed socket tapping screws to 6.5 Nm (58 inch lbs.).





16. Install the shift lever clevis (1).
17. Install the ball and actuator assembly (2).
18. Install the hexagon flanged head bolt.





19. Install the electrical BTSI actuator.
20. Install the gearshift lever and put the column in the neutral position.





21. To adjust the electrical BTSI actuator follow these steps:
21.1. Pull the tab (1) out on the block side (2) of the electrical BTSI actuator.
21.2. Press on the adjuster block (2) to compress the internal adjuster spring to disengage the adjuster teeth. Slide the adjuster block as far away from the solenoid as possible.
21.3. Push the tab (1) in to lock in place.
22. To inspect the electrical BTSI actuator follow these steps:
22.1. Put the gearshift lever in park position.
22.2. Install the column into the vehicle.
22.3. Release the gearshift lever by pressing the brake pedal.
22.4. Energize the solenoid.
22.5. Readjust if needed.
23. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle.
24. Install the shift lever assembly only. Refer to Shift Lever - Assemble - Off Vehicle.
25. Install the tilt spring assembly only. Refer to Tilt Spring - Assemble - Off Vehicle.
26. Install the lock module assembly. Refer to Electronic Column Lock Module - Assemble - Off Vehicle.
