Linear Shift

Removal Procedure

Tools Required
- J 41396 Park Lock Cable Pliers

1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in Restraint Systems.
2. Remove the tilt lever. Refer to Tilt Lever Replacement - On Vehicle.
3. Remove the steering column trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement - On Vehicle.
4. Remove the Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control actuator. Refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Actuator Replacement - On Vehicle
5. Remove the shift lever assembly only. Refer to Shift Lever Replacement - On Vehicle





6. Disconnect the park lock cable assembly (1).
7. Insert a small screwdriver into the slot on the lock module assembly and push against the locking tab to remove.





8. Remove 3 flat head 6 lobed socket tap screws from the linear shift assembly.
9. Remove the linear shift assembly from the steering column.
10. To disassemble the linear shift assembly, proceed to the next step.





11. Remove the hexagon flange head bolt from the gear shift lever assembly.
12. Remove the ball and actuator assembly (2) from the gear shift lever assembly.
13. Remove the shift lever clevis (1) from the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.





14. Remove the 3 oval head 6 lobed socket tapping screws from the shift gate.
Remove the park lock cable assembly from the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.





15. Remove the hexagon flange head bolt from the cable shift cam assembly (1).
16. Remove the cable shift cam assembly (1) from the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.
17. Remove the cam bushing (2) from the cable shift cam assembly (1).





18. Remove the 3 flat head tapping screws from the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.
19. Remove the gear shift lever assembly support bracket from the steering column support assembly.

Installation Procedure

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





1. Install the linear shift assembly and secure using 3 flat head 6 lobed socket tap screws.
Tighten the 3 flat head 6 lobed socket tap screws to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
2. To install the park lock cable assembly, refer to steps 9 and 10.
3. To install the linear shift assembly piece by piece, proceed to the next step.

Important: Lubricate all of the moving parts of the linear shift assembly with synthetic grease.





4. Install the gear shift lever assembly support bracket onto the steering column support assembly.
5. Screw the 3 flat head tapping screws into the gear shift lever assembly.
Tighten the 3 flat head tapping screws to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).





6. Insert the cam bushing (2) into the cable shift cam assembly (1).
7. Install the cable shift cam assembly (1) into the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.
8. Screw the hexagon flange head bolt into the cable shift cam assembly (1).
Tighten the hexagon flange head bolt to 18 Nm (14 ft. lbs.).





9. Install the park lock cable assembly onto the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.
10. Screw the 3 oval head 6-lobed socket tapping screws into the shift gate and park lock cable assembly.
Tighten the 3 oval head 6-lobed socket tapping screws to 6.5 Nm (58 inch lbs.).





11. Install the shift lever clevis (1) into the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.
12. Install the ball actuator assembly (2) onto the gear shift lever assembly.
13. Install the hexagon flange head bolt into the gear shift lever assembly.
Tighten the hexagon flange head bolt to 18 Nm (14 ft. lbs.).
14. To install the linear shift assembly as an assembly, proceed to the next step.
15. Install the ignition lock cylinder. Refer to Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement - On Vehicle





16. Connect the park lock cable assembly (1) to the lock module assembly in the following way:
- Place the steering column lock cylinder set into the off position.
- Place the shift lever clevis into the park position.
- Press the locking tab on the end of the park lock cable assembly (1) into the slot in the lock module assembly.





17. Adjust the park lock cable assembly in the following way:
17.1. Use the shift lever clevis to put the column in the PARK position.
17.2. Put the ignition switch in the accessory position.
17.3. Unlock the adjuster ring (1) on the park lock cable assembly with J 41396
17.4. Pull on the cable until the park lock latch contacts the shift lever clevis. Release the cable.
17.5. Lock the adjuster ring (1) securely in place on the park lock cable assembly with 341396
18. Inspect the park lock cable assembly using the following steps:
18.1. Put the lock cylinder in the OFF-LOCK position. The shift lever clevis should not be able to shift out of the PARK position.
18.2. Turn the key to the RUN position and put the shift lever clevis in the NEUTRAL position.
18.3. With the shift lever clevis in the NEUTRAL position the lock cylinder should not be able to go into the OFF-LOCK position.
18.4. Put the shift lever clevis into the PARK position.
18.5. Put the lock cylinder in the OFF-LOCK position and then remove the key.
18.6. Install the shift lever assembly only. Refer to Shift Lever Replacement - On Vehicle.
18.7. Install the electrical automatic transmission shift interlock actuator. Refer to Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control Actuator Replacement - On Vehicle.
19. Install the steering column trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement - On Vehicle.
20. Install the tilt lever. Refer to Tilt Lever Replacement- On Vehicle.
21. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in Restraint Systems.
