Drum Brake System: Adjustments

Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in Service Precautions.

1. Raise the vehicle and support the vehicle with safety stands. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the adjusting hole plug in the rear brake backing plate.
3. Turn the rear brake shoe adjuster counterclockwise until the wheel can just be turned by hand. The rear brake drag should be equal at both wheels.
4. Back off the rear brake shoe adjuster 33 notches.

Important: Brakes should have no drag after the adjuster has been backed off about 15 notches. If a heavy drag is present, refer to Park Brake Cable Service/Adjustment.

5. Install the adjusting hole plug in the rear brake backing plate.
6. Check the park brake adjustment. Refer to Park Brake Cable Service/Adjustment.
