Power Steering Gear Replacement
Removal Procedure1. Place a drain pan below the steering gear.
2. Disconnect the hoses from the steering gear.
Raise up the hoses in order to prevent oil drainage.
3. Cap the ends of the hoses and the gear fittings in order to prevent the entrance of dirt.
4. Mark the Intermediate shaft to steering gear alignment before removal.
5. Disconnect the intermediate shaft. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Column - Standard or Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Column - Tilt.
6. Remove the pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement in Steering Linkage (Non-Rack and Pinion).
7. Remove the steering gear frame bolts (3) and the steering gear (1).
Installation Procedure
1. Place the steering gear (1) in position.
2. Align the marks made during the removal in order to guide the stub shaft into the cardan joint.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
3. Install the steering gear-to-frame bolts (3).
Tighten the bolts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.).
4. Connect the intermediate shaft. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Column - Standard or Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Column - Tilt.
5. Install the pitman arm. Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement in Steering Linkage (Non-Rack and Pinion).
6. Remove the caps from the steering gear and hoses.
7. Connect the hoses to the steering gear.
Tighten the hose fittings to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
