Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing & Jacket
Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and placket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle (Column Shift)- Tools Required
- J 41688 Centering Sphere Installer
- J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover
1. Remove the lock module assembly. Refer to Electronic Column Lock Module - Disassemble - Off Vehicle.
2. Remove the tilt spring assembly. Refer to Tilt Spring - Disassemble - Off Vehicle.
3. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch. Refer to Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle.
4. Remove the automatic transmission shift lock control.
5. Use a screwdriver to pry the automatic transmission shift lock control from the steering column jacket assembly.
6. Remove the 3 flat head tapping screws from the linear shift assembly.
Remove the linear shift assembly from the steering column support assembly.
7. Remove the steering wheel speed sensor assembly (3).
8. Remove the adapter and bearing assembly (2) from the steering column jacket assembly (1).
9. Remove 2 pivot pins (3) from the steering column support assembly (1) using J 21854-01.
10. Using the tilt lever remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column jacket (2) with the lower steering shaft (3) still attached.
11. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).
Important: Mark the race and upper shaft assembly and the lower shaft assembly before disassembly. Failure to assemble the race and upper shaft assembly and the lower shaft assembly correctly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.
12. Remove the race and upper shaft assembly (1) from the lower steering shaft (2).
13. Insert the race and upper shaft assembly (1) into J 41688.
14. Insert J 41688 into a vise.
15. Rotate the driver 90 degrees in the counterclockwise direction in order to disengage the centering sphere from the race and upper shaft assembly.
16. Remove the race and upper shaft assembly (1) from J 41688.
17. Remove the shaft preload spring and the centering sphere from J 41688.
18. If necessary, discard the old centering sphere and the old shaft preload spring.
19. Remove the 4 TORX(R) (2) from the steering column support assembly (1).
Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle (Floor Shift)

1. Remove the lock module assembly. Refer to Electronic Column Lock Module - Disassemble - Off Vehicle.
2. Remove the tilt spring assembly only. Refer to Tilt Spring - Disassemble - Off Vehicle.
3. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch only. Refer to Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle.
4. Remove the steering wheel speed sensor assembly (3).
5. Remove the adapter and bearing assembly (2) from the steering column jacket assembly (1).
6. Remove 2 pivot pins (3) from the steering column support assembly (1) using J 21854-01.
7. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column jacket assembly (2) with the steering shaft assembly (3) still attached.
8. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).
Important: Mark the race and upper shaft assembly and the lower shaft assembly before disassembly. Failure to assemble the race and upper shaft assembly and the lower shaft assembly correctly will cause the steering wheel to be fumed 180 degrees.
9. Remove the race and upper shaft assembly (1) from the lower steering shaft (2).
10. Insert the race and upper shaft assembly (1) into J 41688.
11. Insert J 41688 into a vise.
12. Rotate the driver 90 degrees in the counterclockwise direction in order to disengage the centering sphere from the race and upper shaft assembly.
13. Remove the race and upper shaft assembly (1) from J 41688.
14. Remove the shaft preload spring and the centering sphere from J 41688.
15. If necessary, discard the old centering sphere and the old shaft preload spring.
16. Remove the 4 TORX(R) screws (2) from the steering column support assembly (1).
Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle (Column Shift)

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
Important: Replace the steering column support assembly (1) and the pivot pins if the steering column support assembly (1) and the pivot pins have been staked 3 times.
1. Install the 4 TORX(R) screws (2) into the steering column support assembly (1).
- Tighten the screws to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).
2. Lubricate the centering sphere (1) with lithium grease.
3. Install the centering sphere (1) and the joint preload spring (2) into J 41688.
4. Compress the centering sphere and joint preload spring. Rotate the driver 90 degrees in the clockwise direction until the arms lock in place.
5. Install the race and upper shaft assembly (1). Rotate the race and upper shaft assembly 90 degrees.
6. Remove the race and upper shaft assembly with J 41688. Rotate the race and upper shaft assembly 90 degrees and remove.
7. Apply lithium grease to the race and upper shaft assembly.
8. Install the lower shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly using the marks from the disassemble procedure.
9. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the steering column tilt head assembly (1).
10. Install the tilt head assembly (1) and the steering shaft (3) into the steering column jacket assembly (2).
Important: Replace the steering column support assembly and the pivot pins if the steering column support assembly and the pivot pins have been staked 3 times.
11. Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly.
12. Stake the pivot pins.
13. Install the adapter and bearing assembly (2) into the steering column jacket assembly (1).
14. Install the steering wheel speed sensor assembly (3).
15. Install the linear shift assembly onto the steering column support assembly.
16. Secure the linear shift assembly to the steering column assembly with the 3 flat head tapping screws.
Move the linear shift assembly out of the PARK position to install the lower socket tapping screw.
- Tighten the 3 flat head tapping screws to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
17. Install the automatic transmission shift lock control.
18. Put the steering column in the NEUTRAL position.
19. Adjust the automatic transmission shift lock control.
19.1. Pull the tab (1) out on the block side (2) of the automatic transmission shift lock control.
19.2. Press on the adjuster block (2) to compress the internal adjuster spring to disengage the adjuster teeth. Slide the adjuster block as far away from the solenoid as possible.
19.3. Lock in place by pushing the tab (1) back in.
20. Inspect the automatic transmission shift lock control.
20.1. The automatic transmission lock control must lock the gear shift lever when it is put into the PARK position.
20.2. When the column is installed in the vehicle you will not be able to shift the gear shift lever out of the PARK position without pressing on the brake pedal. The solenoid will be energized.
20.3. Readjust if needed.
21. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch only. Refer to Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle.
22. Install the tilt spring assembly only. Refer to Tilt Spring - Assemble - Off Vehicle.
23. Install the lock module assembly. Refer to Electronic Column Lock. Module - Assemble - Off Vehicle.
Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle (Floor Shift)

Important: Replace the steering column support assembly and the pivot pins if the steering column support assembly and the pivot pins have been staked 3 times.
1. Install the 4 TORX(R) screws (2) Into the steering column support assembly (1).
- Tighten the screws to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).
2. Lubricate the centering sphere (1) with lithium grease.
3. Install the centering sphere (1) and the joint preload spring (2) into J 41688.
4. Compress the centering sphere and joint preload spring. Rotate the driver 90 degrees in the clockwise direction until the arms lock in place.
5. Install the race and upper shaft assembly (1). Rotate the race and upper shaft assembly 90 degrees.
6. Remove the race and upper shaft assembly with J 41688. Rotate the race and upper shaft assembly 90 degrees and remove.
7. Apply lithium grease to the race and upper shaft assembly.
8. Install the lower shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly using the marks from the disassemble procedure.
9. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the steering column tilt head assembly (1).
10. Install the tilt head assembly (1) and the lower steering shaft (3) into the steering column jacket assembly (2).
Important: Replace the steering column support assembly and the pivot pins if the steering column support assembly and the pivot pins have been staked 3 times.
11. Install the 2 pivot pins onto the steering column support assembly.
12. Stake the pivot pins.
13. Install the adapter and bearing assembly (2) onto the steering column jacket assembly (1).
14. Install the steering wheel speed sensor assembly (3).
15. Install the tilt spring assembly only. Refer to Tilt Spring - Assemble - Off Vehicle.
16. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle.
17. Install the lock module assembly. Refer to Electronic Column Lock Module - Assemble - Off Vehicle.
