Removal and Replacement

Removal Procedure
1. Remove the hood.





2. Loosen the clamps at the throttle body and resonator.
3. Remove the air intake duct.





4. Disconnect the negative battery cable (1).
5. Disconnect the positive battery cable (2),
6. Place fender covers over both fenders.
7. Remove the ignition coils.





8. Relieve fuel system pressure.
9. Disconnect the fuel feed (1) and fuel return pipe (2) connectors.
10. Remove the Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor.
11. Remove the radiator.





12. Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector from the Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) module.
13. Remove the vacuum lines from the engine, as required.





14. Remove the ground cable bolt at the engine block.
15. Remove the generator.
16. Remove the engine electrical harness and tie out of the way.
17. Raise and suitably support the vehicle with safety stands. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
18. Remove the starter motor.
19. Remove the hoses from the power steering pump.
20. Remove the catalytic converter.





21. Remove the torque converter cover bolts.
22. Remove the torque converter cover.





23. Remove the torque converter bolts, if equipped.
24. Remove the clutch pressure plate bolts, if equipped.
25. Remove the bolts from the transmission to the engine.
26. Remove the engine oil cooler lines from the engine block.
27. Lower the vehicle.





28. Attach J36857 to the rear of the right cylinder head and to the front of the left cylinder head.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

29. Install the attaching bolt and washer. Use GM P/N 9428217 with GM P/N 15650963.
Tighten the lift bracket bolts to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).





30. Remove the engine mount through bolts.
31. Remove the engine using a suitable lifting devise.
32. Install the engine onto a suitable engine stand.
33. Remove the generator bracket.





34. Remove the A/C compressor/power steering pump bracket from the cylinder head.
35. Remove the lift brackets from the cylinder heads.

Installation Procedure





1. Attach J36857 to the rear of the right cylinder head and to the front of the left cylinder head.
2. Install the attaching bolt and washer. Use GM P/N 9428217 with GM P/N 15650963.
Tighten the lift bracket bolts to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).





3. Install the A/C compressor/power steering pump bracket to the cylinder head.
Tighten the power steering pump bracket bolts and nut to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
4. Install the generator bracket.
5. Remove the engine using a suitable lifting devise.
6. Install the engine into the vehicle.





7. Install the engine mount through bolts.
Tighten the engine mount through bolt to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.).
8. Remove the lift brackets from the cylinder heads.
9. Raise and suitably support the vehicle with safety stands.
10. Install the engine oil cooler lines to the engine block.





11. Install the bolts from the transmission to the engine.
12. Install the clutch pressure plate bolts, if equipped.
13. Install the torque converter bolts, if equipped.
14. Install the catalytic converter.





15. Install the torque converter cover.
16. Install the torque converter cover bolts.
Tighten the torque converter cover bolts to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
17. Install the hoses from the power steering pump.
18. Install the starter motor.
19. Lower the vehicle.
20. Route the engine electrical harness.
21. Install the generator.





22. Install the ground cable bolt at the engine block.
Tighten the ground cable bolt to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).
23. Install the EGR bracket.
24. Connect the vacuum lines to the engine, as required.





25. Connect the engine harness electrical connector to the Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) module.
26. Install the radiator.
27. Install the A/C compressor.





28. Connect the fuel feed (1) and fuel return pipe (2) connectors.
29. Install the ignition coils.
30. Remove the fender covers from both fenders.





31. Connect the negative battery cable (1).
32. Connect the positive battery cable (2).





33. Install the air intake duct.
34. Tighten the clamps at the throttle body and resonator.
Tighten the air intake duct clamps to 3 Nm (26 inch lbs.).
35. Install the hood.
36. Before starting a new engine or one that has been repaired complete the following procedure.
36.1. Fill the engine with the proper quantity and grade of oil.
36.2. Add engine oil supplement GM P/N 1052367 or equivalent to the engine oil.
36.3. Remove the fuel pump fuse and disconnect the coil harness connectors, then crank the engine until oil pressure is present.
36.4. Crank the engine several times. Listen for any unusual noises or evidence that any of the parts are binding.
36.5. Install the fuel pump fuse and connect the coil harness connectors and start the engine and listen for unusual noises.
36.6. Check the vehicle oil pressure gauge or light and confirm that the engine has acceptable oil pressure. If necessary install an oil pressure gauge and measure the oil pressure.
36.7. Run the engine at about 1000 RPM's until the engine has reached normal operating temperature.
36.8. Inspect for oil and or coolant leaks while the engine is running.
36.9. Stop the engine and perform a final inspection for the proper engine oil and coolant levels.
36.10. The final step is to perform the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor variation learn procedure.
