Tie Rod Replacement
Tie Rod Replacement - Outer- Tools Required
- J 26813-B Steering Linkage Puller
Removal Procedure
1. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with suitable safety stands.
2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
3. Remove the cotter pin from the outer tie rod end.
4. Remove the nut (3) from the outer tie rod end.
5. Loosen the nut on the tie rod end sleeve.
6. Using the J 24319-B, remove the outer tie rod end from the tie rod arm assembly.
7. Remove the outer tie rod from the tie rod sleeve.
8. Inspect the following parts:
8.1. The tie rod end for damage
8.2. The tie rod end seals for excessive wear
8.3. The ball stud threads for damage
8.4. The adjuster tubes for bending or damaged threads
8.5. Clean the tapered surfaces
Installation Procedure
1. Install the outer tie rod end (4) to the tie rod end sleeve (5).
2. Install the outer tie rod end (1) into the tie rod arm.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
3. Install the nut (3) to the outer tie rod end.
- Tighten the nut to 88 Nm (65 ft. lbs.).
4. Install the cotter pin.
4.1. Align the cotter pin slot to the nut with the hole through the tie rod stud.
4.2. DO NOT back off the nut in order to align the slot.
5. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Measuring Wheel Alignment.
6. Tighten the tie rod sleeve nut.
- Tighten the sleeve nut to 104 Nm (77 ft. lbs.).

Removal Procedure
1. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with suitable safety stands.
2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
3. Remove the cotter pin at the ball stud.
4. Remove the nut (2) from the inner tie rod ball stud.
5. Loosen the nut on the tie rod end sleeve (1).
6. Using the J24319-B, remove the inner tie rod end from the tie rod arm.
7. Remove the inner tie rod from the tie rod sleeve.
8. Inspect the following parts:
8.1. The tie rod end for damage
8.2. The tie rod end seals for excessive wear
8.3. The ball stud threads for damage
8.4. The adjuster tubes for bending or damaged threads
8.5. Clean the tapered surfaces
Installation Procedure
1. Install the inner tie rod to the tie rod end sleeve (1).
2. Install the inner tie rod to the tie rod arm.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
3. Install the nut to the inner tie rod end.
- Tighten the nut to 88 Nm (65 ft. lbs.).
4. Install the cotter pin.
4.1. Align the cotter pin slot to the nut with the hole through the tie rod stud.
4.2. DO NOT back off the nut in order to align the slot.
5. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Measuring Wheel Alignment.
6. Tighten the tie rod sleeve nut.
- Tighten the sleeve nut to 104 Nm (77 ft. lbs.).
