Interior - 2nd Row Seat Belt Retractor Won't Lock
File In Section: 09 - RestraintsBulletin No.: 02-09-40-002
Date: June, 2002
TECHNICAL
Subject:
Second Row Seat Belt Retractor Does Not Automatically Lock When Installing a Child Restraint (Replace Both Seat Belt Retractors)
Models:
2000-2001 Chevrolet and GMC C/K Crew Cab Pickup and Utility Models (Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon, Yukon XL, Yukon Denali, Yukon Denali XL)
Condition
Some customers may comment that the seat belt retractor located in the second row outboard (left or right) seating positions does not remain in the Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) or ratcheting mode during installation of some child seat restraint systems.
Important:
All seat belt systems have a Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) feature that causes the retractor to lock during a vehicle crash. The subject models include a supplemental feature in the rear outboard seating positions that allow a child restraint system to be secured to the vehicle's seat by use of the ALR function.
Cause
Certain child seat designs allow excess seat belt webbing material to retract into the retractor when the child seat is being secured. If this occurs, the retractor may cancel the ALR mode, and switch back to the ELR mode. This switching back to the ELR mode should be considered a normal function and does not affect the seat belt retractor's normal locking functions during a vehicle crash.
Important:
To activate the ALR mode when installing a child restraint system, the seat belt webbing material must be fully extended out of the retractor. To cancel the ALR mode, the seat belt webbing material must be fully retracted back into the retractor.
