Wheel Bearing Adjustment

Removal Procedure

1. Block the front wheels.
2. Raise the rear axle and place the jack stands under the frame rails. Ensure that the vehicle rear wheels are off the floor. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair in General Information.
3. Release the parking brake.
4. Remove the axle shafts. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft and/or Gasket Replacement Rear Axle Shaft and/or Gasket Replacement.
5. Remove the following rear wheel bearing components:

* The outer adjust nut
* The rear wheel bearing adjust nut lock

6. Loosen the rear wheel bearing inner adjust nut.

Installation Procedure

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

1. Rotate the rear tire and wheel assembly.

Tighten the rear wheel bearing inner adjust nut to 68 Nm (50 lb ft).

Important: Rotate the rear tire and wheel assembly while tightening the rear wheel bearing inner adjust nut in order to ensure proper seating of the rear wheel bearings.


2. Back off the rear wheel bearing inner adjust nut 1/6 to 1/4 turn.
3. Install the rear wheel bearing adjust nut lock.
4. Install the rear wheel bearing outer adjust nut.

Tighten the rear wheel bearing outer adjust nut to 169 Nm (125 lb ft).




5. Bend one tang of the rear wheel bearing adjust nut lock over the flat of each rear wheel bearing adjust nut.
6. Install the rear axle shafts. Refer to Rear Axle Shaft and/or Gasket Replacement Rear Axle Shaft and/or Gasket Replacement.
7. Lower the rear axle housing. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair in General Information.
