Transmission Replacement

^ Tools Required
- J 42371 Clutch Line Release Tool

Removal Procedure





1. Shift the transmission into 3rd or 4th speed gear.
2. Remove the shift lever from the shift tower.
3. Do not remove the shift lever adjusting nut.





4. Remove 4 plastic retainer plugs securing the shift boot retainer to the shift boot.
5. Remove 4 screws securing the shift boot and insulator to the floor panel.
6. Remove the retainer and shift boot from the shift lever.





7. Remove the 4 bolts securing the shift housing to the transmission.
8. Remove the shift tower from the vehicle.
9. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.





10. If needed drain the transmission oil.
11. If equipped with a transfer case, remove the front propeller shaft.
12. If equipped, remove the two transfer case shields.
13. Remove the rear propeller shaft.
14. If equipped with a manual transfer case, remove the manual transfer case shift linkage.
15. Use the J 42371, push back on the white plastic sleeve on the quick connect in order to separate the hydraulic clutch line from the clutch actuator quick connect.
16. Disconnect the wiring harness and connector from the vehicle speed sensor, backup lamp switch, and transmission harness retainers.
17. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.





18. Remove the crossmember bolts and crossmember.
19. Remove the transmission rear mount.





20. Remove the 4 bolts securing the transmission to the bell housing.
21. Pull the transmission straight back on the clutch hub splines. Do not let the transmission hang from the clutch plate and the clutch cover.
22. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
23. Remove the clutch actuator from the transmission.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the clutch actuator to the transmission.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

2. Install the transmission:
2.1. Ensure the transmission is positioned in the 3rd or 4th speed gear.
2.2. Rotate the transmission clockwise onto the clutch hub splines.
2.3. Install the 4 bolts that secure the transmission to the bell housing.
^ Tighten the bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the transmission rear mount.
4. Install the crossmember and crossmember bolts.
^ Tighten the crossmember bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the transmission mount to transmission bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the transmission mount to crossmember nut to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the clutch line to the clutch actuator.





6. Connect the wiring harness and connector from the vehicle speed sensor, backup lamp switch, and transmission harness retainers.
7. Fill the transmission with fluid if necessary.
8. If equipped with a manual transfer case install the manual transfer case shift linkage.
9. If equipped with a manual transfer case install the propeller shafts.
10. If equipped, install the transfer case shields.
11. Lower the vehicle.





12. Install the 4 bolts securing the shift housing to the transmission.
^ Tighten the shift housing bolts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).





13. Position the retainer and shift boot onto the shift lever.
14. Install 4 screws securing the shift boot and insulator to the floor panel.
^ Tighten the screws to 2 Nm (18 inch lbs.).
15. Install 4 plastic retainer plugs securing the shift boot retainer to the shift boot.





16. Install the shift lever to the shift tower.
If required, use the shift lever adjusting nut to center the shift lever.
^ Tighten the shift lever nut to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
