Inner Axle Seal and/or Bearing Replacement - Front Drive Axle

^ Tools Required
- J 21579 Inner Axle Shaft Puller
- J 22833 Housing Drive Gear Seal Installer (9.25 inch axle)
- J 23907 Slide Hammer
- J 2619-01 Slide Hammer with Adapter
- J 29369-1 Bushing/Bearing Remover
- J 29369-2 Bushing/Bearing Remover (2-3 inch)
- J 36600 Output Shaft Seal Installer (8.25 inch axle)
- J 36609 Axle Tube Bearing Installer

Removal Procedure





1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the left or the right wheel drive shaft as necessary.

Important: Do not damage the case.

3. If replacing the left side seal and/or bearing, perform the following steps:
3. Remove the left side inner axle shaft by doing the following:
3.1.1. Install the J2619-01 (1) and the J 21579 (2)- as shown.
3.1.2. Remove the left inner axle shaft by pulling on the J 2619.
3.2. Install the J 29369-1 (8.25 inch axle) or the J 29369-2 (9.25 inch axle) to the J 23907
3.3. Remove the axle shaft seal and the bearing using the J23907.





4. If replacing the right side seal and/or bearing, perform the following steps:
4.1. Remove the right side inner axle shaft by doing the following:
4.1.1. Remove the inner axle shaft and housing assembly from the differential carrier case assembly.
4.1. 2Remove the clutch fork assembly components and the inner axle shaft from the inner axle shaft housing.
4.2. Install the J 29369-1 (8.25 inch axle) or the J 29369-2 (9.25 inch axle) (2) to the J 23907 (1). Remove the axle shaft seal and the bearing using the J 23907 (1).

Installation Procedure





1. If installing the right side bearing and/or seal perform the following steps:
1.1. Install the bearing with the square shoulder in using the J 36609.
1.2. Install the new axle shaft seal using the J 36600 (8.25 inch axle) or the J 22833 (9.25 inch axle).
1.3. Install the inner axle shaft,into the inner axle shaft hosing.
Carefully tap the inner axle shaft into place with a soft mallet.
1.4. Install the clutch fork. assembly components.
1.5. Install the inner axle shaft and housing assembly to the differential carrier case assembly.
2. If installing the left side bearing and/or seal, perform the following steps:
2.1. Install the bearing with the square shoulder in using the J 36609.
2.2. Install the new axle shaft seal using the J 36600 (8.25 inch axle) or the J 22833 (9.25 inch axle).
2.3. Install the inner axle shaft.
Carefully tap the inner axle shaft into place with a soft mallet.
3. Install the left or the right wheel drive shaft, as necessary.
4. Inspect the axle lubricant level and add, if necessary.
5. Lower the vehicle.
