Torque Converter Replacement^ Tools Required
- J 21366 Converter Holding Strap
Removal Procedure
1. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
2. Position the transmission vertically with the torque converter end up.
3. Remove the J 21366 bracket retaining the torque converter assembly.
Important: The distance from the torque converter mounting lugs to the transmission mounting face is an important measurement. It is required to check correct reassembly of the torque converter.
4. Take the measurement described in the IMPORTANT above.
5. Attach a three-strand sling (1) to the torque converter (2). Lift the torque converter (2) from the transmission and set it safely aside.
Installation Procedure
1. Lubricate the converter pump hub OD and the torque converter seal with clean transmission fluid.
2. Use the three-strand sling (1) to lower the torque converter (2) over the turbine shaft and ground sleeve. Remove the three-strand sling.
3. Spin the torque converter to engage the turbine shaft splines in the torque converter hub, the ground sleeve splines in the stator race and to engage the drive flats on the converter pump hub with the oil pump drive gear.
4. The torque converter is correctly installed when the same measurement taken in the removal procedure is obtained.
5. Install the J 21366 Converter Holding Strap.
6. Reinstall the transmission into the vehicle.
