100. P1 Planetary and C4 Clutch Installation
P1 Planetary and C4 Clutch InstallationTools Required
^ J24204-2 Bar and Stud Assembly
^ J44530 C3/C4 Piston Spring Compressor
1. Position the main housing so that the rear of the main housing is facing up.
2. Apply TransJel or an equivalent lubricant to the inside and outside diameters of new C4 clutch piston assembly (1).
3. Align new C4 clutch piston assembly (1) so that the seal is facing down and the 1.016 mm (0.040 inch) lubrication/cooling orifice is positioned at the top of the main housing.
4. Install C4 clutch piston assembly (1).
5. Gently tap the piston until the piston seats.
6. Align P1 ring gear (1) so that the outside splines are facing down.
7. Install P1 ring gear (1).
8. Rotate the ring gear until the C3 friction plates are engaged.
9. Make sure P1 ring gear (1) is seated against the thrust plates of the C3 clutch backplate assembly.
10. install P1 planetary module (2).
11. Rotate the P1 module until the it drops into place.
Notice: Installing the thrust bearing incorrectly could destroy the transmission.
12. Align thrust bearing (1) so that the blue stripe on the thrust bearing is facing away from P1 planetary module (2).
13. Install thrust bearing (1) onto P1 planetary module (2).
Important: The spring assemblies can be reused. If necessary, squeeze the spring assembly tabs with pliers to make sure the spring assemblies snap onto the spring plate.
14. Install three piston return spring assemblies (1) onto C4 spring plate (2).
15. Align spring plate (4) and piston return spring assemblies (3) with the spring assemblies up.
16. Install spring plate (4) into the main housing.
17. Starting with a C4 clutch friction plate, alternately install five C4 clutch friction plates (1) and four C4 clutch reaction plates (2).
18. Install C4 clutch backplate (1).
Notice: DO NOT install special tools, J tools, onto the gear thrust plate rivets of the C3 clutch backplate assembly. The special tools could damage the gear thrust plate rivets.
19. The threaded rod of J24204-2 must pass through but not touch the bushing.
20. Install J24204-2 (1) and J44530 (2) into the main housing.
21. Make sure J24204-2 does not touch gear thrust plate rivets (6) on the C3 clutch backplate assembly.
22. Compress piston return spring assemblies (5) until the retaining ring groove is visible.
Important: The spiral retaining ring must be installed so that the spring leaves lay on top of each other. The leaves must not cross over themselves.
23. Install spiral retaining ring (4).
24. Install retaining ring (3).
Notice: DO NOT damage the P1 planetary carrier bushing when removing J24204-2 from the main housing. The threaded rod of J24204-2 must pass through but not touch the bushing.
25. Remove J24204-2 and J44530 from the main housing.
