Oil Pump: Service and Repair

Oil Pump Replacement

Removal Procedure





1. Remove the engine oil pan.
2. Remove the oil pump drive bolt.
3. Remove the oil pump drive. Do this by lifting and turning the oil pump drive.





4. Remove the bolt that attaches the oil pump to the rear main bearing cap.
5. Remove the oil pump.





6. Remove the oil pump drive shaft.

Important: Do not crack the oil pump drive shaft retainer.

7. Remove the oil pump drive shaft retainer.





Important: A loose oil pump tube can cause an air leak and a loss of oil pressure.

8. Inspect the oil pump pickup tube for looseness.
9. Clean and inspect the oil pump.
10. Inspect the mating surfaces between the engine and the oil pump.
It must be clean and free of burrs.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the oil pump drive. Do this by twisting the oil pump drive into place.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

2. Install the oil pump drive bolt.
^ Tighten the oil pump drive bolt to 55 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).





3. Heat the oil pump drive shaft retainer in hot water.
4. Install the oil pump drive shaft retainer on the oil pump drive shaft.





Important: Do not crack the oil pump drive shaft retainer when installing the oil pump drive shaft.

5. Install the oil pump drive shaft into the oil pump.





6. Install the oil pump.
7. Install the bolt that attaches the oil pump to the rear main bearing cap.
^ Tighten the bolt that attaches the oil pump to the rear main bearing cap to 43 Nm (32 ft. lbs.).
8. Install the engine oil pan.
