Trim Covers, Shift Lever Seal

Trim Covers, Shift Lever Seal - Disassemble - Off Vehicle (Column Shift)

- Tools Required
- J 41352 Modular Column Holding Fixture
- J 42640 Steering Column Anti Rotation Pin





1. Put the steering column and J 41352 into a vise.
2. Insert J 42640 into the lower trim cover of the steering column.
3. Inspect the steering column for accident damage.





4. Remove the 2 pan head tapping screws (1) from the lower trim cover (2).





5. Remove the lower trim cover from the upper trim cover.
6. Tilt the lower trim cover down.
7. Slide the lower trim cover backward in order to disengage the locking tabs.





8. Slide the shift lever seal (2) up the shift lever (4).
Remove the shift lever screw (3) from the shift lever assembly (4).
9. Remove the shift lever assembly (4).
10. Remove the shift lever seal (2) from the shift lever (4).





11. Remove the trim cover protector (1) from the lower trim cover (2).





12. Remove the 2 TORX(R) head screws (1) from the upper trim cover (2).
13. Remove the upper trim cover (2) from the steering column.

Assemble

1. Install the upper trim cover (2) onto the steering column.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

2. Screw the 2 TORX(R) head screws (1) into the upper trim cover (2).
Tighten
Tighten the 2 TORX(R) head screws to 1.5 Nm (13 inch lbs.).





3. Install the trim cover protector (1) onto the lower trim cover (2).





4. Install the shift lever seal (2) into the shift lever (4).
5. Install the shift lever assembly (4) into the steering column.
6. Install the shift lever screw (3) into the shift lever assembly (4).
Tighten
Tighten the screw to 1.5 Nm (13 inch lbs.).
7. Slide the shift lever seal (2) down the shift lever (4).

Important: The shift lever seal must seat in the grooves of the trim covers.





8. Install the lower trim cover onto the upper trim cover.
9. Match the tab slots on the lower trim cover with the locking tabs on the upper trim cover.
10. Tilt the lower trim cover up.
11. Slide the lower trim cover forward until the locking tabs snap into the tab slots.





12. Screw the 2 pan head tapping screws (1) into the lower trim cover (2).
Tighten
Tighten the 2 pan head tapping screws to 3.5 Nm (31 inch lbs.).





13. Remove J 42640 from the lower trim cover of the steering column.
14. Remove the steering column and J 41352 from the vise.
