Drum Brake System: Service and Repair

Drum Brake Hardware Replacement

Removal Procedure





1. Install the pin into the park brake lever.
2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
4. Remove the brake drum.
5. Remove the brake shoe return springs.





6. Remove the brake shoe guide.





7. Remove the hold down springs.
8. Remove the hold down pins.
9. Remove the actuator lever and the actuator lever pivot.
10. Remove the actuator lever and the lever pivot.
11. Remove the lever return spring.
12. Inspect all remaining parts for discoloration due to heat or stress. Replace parts as needed.

Installation Procedure





1. Lubricate the brake shoe backing plate, the adjusting screw threads, socket and socket face with a thin coat of high temperature silicone brake lubricant.





2. Install the actuator lever and the lever pivot.
3. Install the actuator lever return spring.
4. Install the hold down pins.
5. Install the hold down springs.





6. Install the brake shoe guide.





7. Install the brake shoe return springs.
8. Install the brake drum.
9. Remove the pin to the park brake lever.
10. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
11. Adjust the brakes.
12. Lower the vehicle.
13. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal approximately 2/3 of it's travel distance.
14. Slowly release the brake pedal.
15. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 13-14 until a firm brake pedal is obtained. This will properly seat the wheel cylinders and brake shoes.
