Transmission Rear Case Disassemble^ Tools Required
- J 44707 Gear Puller
- J 44736 Bridge and Forcing Screw
- J 44737 Shift Rail Bearing Remover
- J 44738 Countershaft Bearing Remover
Notice: The case sealing surface is a machine surface. Prevent the case sealing surface from getting nicks, scratches or other damage. Damage to the case sealing surface may cause leakage.
1. Remove the bolt and washer retaining the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
2. Remove the VSS and O-ring seals.
3. Remove and discard the O-ring seals.
4. Remove the back up lamp switch.
5. Remove the bolt with the O-ring seal for the reverse gear idler shaft bracket.
6. Remove and discard the O-ring seal.
7. Remove the reverse gear idler shaft bracket. Rotate the bracket to aid in removal.
8. Remove the reverse gear idler shaft.
9. Remove the reverse idler gear bearings.
10. Remove the reverse idler gear.
11. If the transmission is for a RWD, remove the main shaft rear oil seal and discard.
12. If the transmission is for a 4WD, remove the main shaft rear bearing O-ring seal and discard.
Important: Only remove the bearings if replacing the bearings. Do not reuse the bearings after removal.
13. Inspect the bearings for damage or wear.
14. Remove the rear case shift rail bearing using the J 44707 (1) and the J 44737 (2). Expand the J 44737 to fit securely in the bearing.
Important: Only remove the bearings if replacing the bearings. Do not reuse the bearings after removal.
15. Inspect the bearings for damage or wear.
16. Remove the countershaft rear bearing from the rear case using the J 44736 (1) and the J 44738 (2). Expand the J 44738 to fit securely in the bearing.
