Starter Motor: Service and Repair

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution In Service Precautions.




1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle with safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.




3. If necessary, remove the engine shield bolts and shield.




4. If necessary, remove the oil pan skid plate bolts and plate.




5. Remove the front axle mounting bracket nut.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT remove the bolt.

6. Reposition the front axle mounting bracket bolt until the bolt tip is flush with the support bushing.




7. Remove the starter bolts.
8. Slide the starter forward until the starter clears the transmission.




9. Remove the starter lead nut.
10. Remove the starter lead (4) from the starter.




11. Remove the positive cable nut.
12. Remove the positive cable from the starter.




13. If necessary, remove the starter heat shield bolts, nut, and shield.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.




1. If necessary, install the starter heat shield, nut and bolts.

Tighten
- Tighten the bolts to 3 N.m (35 lb in).
- Tighten the nut to 5 N.m (44 lb in).




2. Install the positive cable to the starter.
3. Install the positive cable nut.

Tighten
Tighten the nut to 9 N.m (80 lb in).




4. Install the starter lead (4) to the starter.
5. Install the starter lead nut.

Tighten
Tighten the nut to 3.4 N.m (30 lb in).




6. Position the starter into place.
7. Install the starter bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).




8. Position the front axle mounting bracket bolt until the bolt is fully seated.

9. Install the front axle mounting bracket nut.

Tighten
Tighten the nut to 95 N.m (70 lb ft).




10. If necessary, install the oil pan skid plate and bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).




11. If necessary, install the engine shield and bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).

12. Lower the vehicle.




13. Connect the negative battery cable.
