IP Carrier Replacement
Removal Procedure
Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cables.
2. Remove the 3 relay center bolts from the underside of the wheel opening.
3. Remove the bulkhead connector.
4. Remove the following components from the bulkhead connector:
* The screws from the convenience center to the cowl
* The cruise control harness, if equipped
* The forward lamp harness
5. Remove the coolant reservoir.
6. Disconnect the antenna lead-in and the grommet.
7. Remove the knee bolster.
8. Remove the steering shaft pinch bolt.
9. Remove the left and the right sill plate front screw.
10. Remove the left and the right hinge pillar trim panels.
11. Remove the brake release handle from the cable.
The clip releases the handle from the cable.
12. Remove the reaction plate assembly.
13. Remove the tie bar.
14. Remove the knee deflector bracket.
15. Disconnect the 8-way column connector.
16. Disconnect the 48-way connector retainer in order to access the 2 lower column nuts.
17. Disconnect the automatic transmission range selector cable.
18. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.
19. Remove the manual transmission shift lever.
20. Remove the front floor console, if necessary.
21. Remove the left and the right lower IP pivot bolts.
22. Remove the IP storage compartment door.
23. Remove the IP storage compartment.
Squeeze the compartment in order to release the compartment.
24. Remove the 2 IP attaching bolts through the storage compartment door.
25. Remove the center support screw.
26. Remove the three IP upper support screws.
27. Remove the IP from the front of the dash.
28. Disconnect the park brake release handle.
29. Disconnect the following electrical connectors as necessary:
* The heating, ventilation and air conditioning module (HVACM)
* The 22-way engine harness
* The stoplamp switch. Refer to Stop Lamp Switch Replacement in Hydraulic Brakes.
* The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) calibrator module. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Module Replacement.
* The clutch or brake release switches
* The Diesel electronic accelerator
* The HVAC control cables, if equipped. Refer to Temperature Control Cable Replacement or Mode Control Cable Replacement in HVAC-Manual.
30. Remove the IP from the vehicle.
Disassembly Procedure
To this point, the IP removal is complete. If the IP is being replaced or refinished, then use the following procedure in order to transfer parts that are not furnished with the new IP.
1. Remove the accessory switches as necessary.
2. Remove the instrument cluster bezel.
3. Remove the headlamp switch.
4. Remove the HVAC control assembly.
1. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
2. Disconnect the cables, if equipped.
5. Remove the instrument cluster screws and the cluster.
6. Remove the IP auxiliary storage compartment, if equipped.
7. Remove the IP cupholder.
8. Remove the ashtray assembly.
9. Remove the radio from the carrier.
10. Remove the 2 air distribution duct screws.
11. Remove the air distributor duct from the IP.
Squeeze the clips from the front of the IP in order to release the duct.
12. Disconnect the antenna lead-in.
13. Remove the retaining clips from the IP compartment assembly.
14. On vehicles over 8,600 GVWR, remove the 4 nuts that retain the IP compartment assembly to the carrier.
15. Remove the rosebud retainers on the right side of the IP forward harness.
16. Remove the IP storage compartment.
Squeeze the compartment in order to release the compartment.
17. Remove the IP storage compartment lamp.
Slide the compartment in order to release the compartment.
18. For the Diesel engine, remove the low coolant module.
19. Remove the data link connector (DLC).
1. Remove the one screw.
2. Slide the DLC out.
20. Remove the harness retainer to accessory switches.
21. Remove the fuse panel and the courtesy lamp switch.
22. Remove the ground screw.
23. Remove the harness from the IP.
24. Remove the jumper harness to the remote playback device, if equipped.
25. Remove the courtesy lamp switches.
26. Remove the side window defogger outlets.
27. Remove the park brake cable clips.
28. Remove both of the air outlet deflectors.
29. Remove the IP storage compartment door check strap.
30. Remove the IP storage compartment door striker.
Assembly Procedure
Important: If you replaced the instrument panel perform the following.
1. Install the IP storage compartment door striker.
2. Install the IP storage compartment door check strap to the tubular steel tie bar.
3. Install both of the air outlet deflectors.
4. Connect the parking brake release handle.
5. Install the side window defogger outlets.
6. Install the courtesy lamp switch.
Connect the electrical connector.
7. Install the jumper harness to the remote playback device, if equipped.
8. Install the harness to the IP.
9. Install the ground screw.
10. Install the fuse panel and the courtesy lamp switch.
11. Install the harness retainer to accessory switches.
12. Install the data link connector (DLC).
1. Slide in the DLC.
2. Install the one screw.
13. For the Diesel engine, install the low coolant module.
14. Install the IP storage compartment lamp.
15. Install the rosebud retainers for the harness on the right side of the IP.
16. Install the retaining clips to the IP compartment assembly.
17. Connect the antenna lead-in.
18. Install the air distributor duct to the IP.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
19. Install the 2 air distributor duct screws.
Tighten the 2 air distributor duct screws to 2 N.m (18 lb in).
20. Install the radio into the carrier.
21. Install the ashtray assembly.
22. Install the IP cupholder.
23. Install the IP auxiliary storage compartment, if equipped.
24. Install the instrument cluster.
25. Install the HVAC control assembly.
26. Install the headlamp switch.
27. Install the instrument cluster bezel.
28. Install the accessory switches as necessary.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the IP to the vehicle.
Rest the IP on the lower pivot studs.
2. Connect the following electrical connectors as necessary.
* The heating, ventilation and air conditioning module (HVACM)
* The 22-way engine harness
* The stop lamp switch. Refer to Stop Lamp Switch Replacement in Hydraulic Brakes.
* The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) calibrator module. Refer to Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Module Replacement.
* The clutch or brake release switches
* The Diesel electronic accelerator
* The HVAC control cables, if equipped. Refer to Temperature Control Cable Replacement or Mode Control Cable Replacement in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
3. Connect the park brake release handle.
4. Install the IP to the cowl.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
5. Install the 3 IP upper support screws.
Tighten the 3 IP upper support screws to 2 N.m (18 lb in).
6. Install the center support screw.
7. Install the IP attaching bolts through the storage compartment door.
8. Install the IP storage compartment.
9. Install the left and the right IP pivot bolts.
10. Install the front floor console if removed.
11. Install the manual transmission shift lever.
12. Install the steering column to the vehicle.
13. Connect the automatic transmission range selector cable.
14. Install the 48-way connector and screw built into the steering column.
15. Install the 8-way column connector.
16. Install the tie bar and the 4 nuts.
17. Install the knee deflector bracket.
18. Install the reaction plate assembly.
19. Connect the brake release handle to the cable.
20. Install the left and the right hinge pillar trim panels.
21. Install the left and the right sill plate front screws.
Tighten the sill plate front screws to 2 N.m (18 lb in).
22. Install the steering shaft and the bolt.
23. Install the knee bolster.
24. Install the coolant reservoir tank.
25. Install the bulkhead connector.
26. Install the 3 relay center bolts to the underside of the wheel opening.
27. Connect the negative battery cable.
