Linear Shift Assembly Replacement - On Vehicle

- J 41396 Park Lock Cable Pliers

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in Service Precautions.

1. Disable the SIR system.
2. Remove the knee bolster.
3. Install the steering column upper and lower trim covers.
4. Remove the automatic transmission shift lock actuator.





5. Disconnect the park lock cable (1).
6. The steering column lock cylinder set should be in the off-lock position.
7. Insert a small screwdriver into the slot on the lock module assembly and push against the locking tab to remove.





8. Disconnect the automatic transmission shift lock control electrical connector from the park position switch.
9. Remove the park position switch from the linear shift assembly.





10. Remove the linear shift assembly mounting screws.
11. Remove the linear shift assembly from the steering column.
12. To disassemble the linear shift assembly, proceed to the next step.
13. Remove the gear shift lever assembly mounting bolt.





14. Remove the ball and actuator assembly (2) from the gear shift lever assembly.
15. Remove the shift lever clevis (1) from the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.





16. Remove the shift gate mounting screws.
17. Remove the park lock cable assembly from the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.





18. Remove the cable shift cam assembly (1) mounting bolt.
19. Remove the cable shift cam assembly (1) from the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.
20. Remove the cam bushing (2) from the cable shift cam assembly (1).





21. Remove the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly mounting screws.
22. Remove the gear shift lever assembly support bracket from the steering column support assembly.

Installation Procedure

Important: Lubricate all of the moving parts of the linear shift assembly with synthetic grease.

1. Install the gear shift lever assembly support bracket onto the steering column support assembly.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





2. Install the gear shift lever assembly mounting screws.
Tighten the gear shift lever assembly mounting screws to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).





3. Insert the cam bushing (2) into the cable shift cam assembly (1).
4. Install the cable shift cam assembly (1) into the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.
5. Install the cable shift cam assembly (1) mounting bolt.
Tighten the cable shift cam assembly mounting bolt to 18 Nm (14 ft. lbs.).





6. Install the park lock cable assembly onto the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.
7. Install the shift gate and park lock cable assembly mounting screws.
Tighten the shift gate and park lock cable assembly mounting screws to 6.5 Nm (58 inch lbs.).





8. Install the shift lever clevis (1) into the support bracket for the gear shift lever assembly.
9. Install the ball actuator assembly (2) onto the gear shift lever assembly.
10. Install the gear shift lever assembly mounting bolt.
Tighten the gear shift lever assembly mounting bolt to 18 Nm (14 ft. lbs.).
11. To install the linear shift assembly as an assembly, proceed to the next step.





12. Install the linear shift assembly mounting screws.
Tighten the linear shift assembly mounting screws to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).





13. Install the park position switch to the linear shift assembly.
14. Connect the automatic transmission shift lock control electrical connector to the park position switch.





15. Connect the park lock cable assembly (1) to the lock module in the following way:
^ Place the steering column lock cylinder set into the off position.
^ Place the shift lever clevis into the park position.
^ Press the locking tab on the end of the park lock cable assembly (1) into the slot in the lock module.





16. Adjust the park lock cable assembly.
16.1. Use the shift lever clevis to put the column in the park position.
16.2. Put the ignition switch in the off-lock position. Remove the key.
16.3. Unlock the adjuster ring (1) on the park lock cable assembly with J 41396.
16.4. Pull on the cable until the park lock latch contacts the shift lever clevis. Release the cable.
16.5. Lock the adjuster ring (1) securely in place on the park lock cable assembly with J 4 1396.
17. Inspect the park lock cable assembly.
17.1. Put the lock cylinder in the off-lock position. The shift lever clevis should not be able to shift out of the park position.
17.2. Turn the key to the run position and put the shift lever clevis in the neutral position.
17.3. With the shift lever clevis in the neutral position the lock cylinder should not be able to go into the off-lock position.
17.4. Put the shift lever clevis into the park position.
17.5. Put the lock cylinder in the off-lock position and then remove the key.
18. Install the automatic transmission shift lock actuator.
19. Install the steering column upper and lower trim covers.
20. Install the knee bolster.
21. Enable the SIR system.
