Disc Brake System: Service and Repair

Disc Brake Hardware Replacement

Removal Procedure

1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the tire and the wheel assembly.

Notice: Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic's wire, or equivalent, whenever it is separated from it's mount and the hydraulic flexible brake hose is still connected. Failure to support the caliper in this manner will cause the flexible brake hose to bear the weight of the caliper, which may cause damage to the brake hose and in turn may cause a brake fluid leak.

Important: Do NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the caliper.

3. Remove the front brake caliper from the mounting bracket and support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic's wire or equivalent.
4. Remove the front outboard brake pad. Use a flat-bladed tool to disengage the bottoms on the front brake pad from the holes in the front brake caliper housing.

5. Remove the front inboard brake pad.

Important: Do not attempt to polish away any corrosion.

6. Replace the caliper bolts, bushings, and sleeves.

Installation Procedure

1. Lubricate the front brake caliper, bushings, bolts and seals with high temperature silicone brake lubricant.

2. Install the front inboard brake pad.
^ Snap the retainer ring into the front brake caliper piston.
^ The front brake pad retainer spring is already staked to the brake pad.
^ The front brake pad must lay flat against the front brake caliper piston.

3. Install the front outboard brake pad with the wear indicator at the leading edge of the front brake pad during forward wheel rotation. The back of the front brake pad must lay flat against the brake caliper.
4. Install the front brake caliper onto the front brake rotor and check for firm pedal.
5. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal approximately 2/3 of the pedal's travel distance.
6. Slowly release the brake pedal.
7. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 5-6 until a firm brake pedal is obtained. This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
8. Lower the vehicle.
