Fuel Filter: Service and Repair

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

IMPORTANT: Clean the fuel filter connections and surrounding area before disconnecting the fuel lines in order to avoid possible fuel system contamination.




1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to the Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure.
2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
3. Clean the fuel filter connections.
4. Using a flare nut wrench and backup wrench, disconnect the fuel lines (1) from the fuel filter.
5. Cap the fuel lines in order to prevent possible fuel system contamination.
6. Remove the fuel lines from the retainers.
7. Remove the fuel filter bracket nuts.
8. Pull out the filter/bracket in order to separate the lines from the filter.
9. Slide the fuel filter from the bracket.
10. Inspect the fuel line O-rings for cuts, nicks, swelling, or distortion. Replace the O-rings if necessary.
11. If a restricted fuel filter is found, clean the entire fuel system. Refer to Fuel System Cleaning.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE




1. Slide the NEW fuel filter into the bracket.
2. Remove the caps from the fuel lines.
3. Pull out the filter/bracket in order to insert the lines into the filter.
4. Tighten the fittings until snug.

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions Fastener Notice.

5. Install the fuel filter bracket nuts.

Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 12 N.m (106 lb in).

6. Install the fuel lines to the retainers.
7. Using a flare nut wrench and backup wrench, tighten the fuel lines (1).

Tighten
Tighten the fittings to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

8. Lower the vehicle.
9. Install the fuel fill cap.
10. Connect the negative battery cable.
11. Use the following procedure in order to inspect for leaks:
11.1. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF, for 2 seconds.
11.2. Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
11.3. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
11.4. Inspect for fuel leaks.
